I have definitely seen more stuff for sale down here that is made in Canada since NAFTA was signed. A vast majority of frozen foods and a lot of lumber products have Canada stamped on it. My kid's wooden swing set and my shed were both made in Canada.

Nearly impossible to find anything here that says "Made in USA".

Didn't say it was perfect! If our government is involved, it most definitely isn't perfect! :) Definitely wish the US would allow more lumber to be imported. We are paying through the nose for what we have available.

where are all the lieberal huggers now? weren't you saying that Harper was just kissing yankee butt?

where r u all now?

I say lets re-do NAFTA. Make it more fair. Seems that it works when the Americans are getting what they want and does not when they are not. We are not to blame for manufacturing jobs moving out of the U.S. What NAFTA does for Canada is make it easy for us to sell our resources south of the frontier. We however, can't stop selling them if we need them for our own uses. However, when we have a resource (softwood lumber, wheat, other ag. products) American trade practice takes over and we loose.
This can't be blamed on the Conservatives, as the Liberals have been lazy about finding alternatives also. If we are in a better position, lets re-do it. And bring in superior U.S environmental laws before northern Saskatchewan is destroyed.

If Harper finally makes Canada stand up for itself an be the first to proudly bully America into submission to make sure Canada gets the best side for once, instead of vise-versa, I would possibly promote any vote for him.

For now, we'll see.

Either way, I hope NAFTA is obliterated and Canada gets the best it can get.

The future looks bright, baby, 8)

you want to see nafta obliterarted ? why do you want to see even more jobs and money disappear ?

do you really think our economy would be better off without free trade with our neighbours to the south ?

Yup, then there would ne NO FREE TRADE.

Protectionism taxes good that are being sold far below other Canadian Goods and stops foreign companies from putter Casnadian manufaturers out of business.

It protect Canadian jobs and industry.

It makes for a level playing field against countries that rathwer than sending their children to school, they put them to work for a dollar a day. How is any country to compete against this type of abuse.

Because of this trade imbalance, China has been getting richer while Canada and the USA is getting poorer. I guess if you agree with KOYOTO you would like this deal, the sharing of wealth to poorer nations right.

pro-NAFTA shut up and go shop WalMart...

but the thing is its kind of hard to re-do nafta now that it has allready been in place for years . mean we can't just say well now that economy is slower its time to change the deal ? mean it was working great when the economy was better , the countries involved can't just randomly decide to change it whenever things get slow . that just doesn't make sense or seem fair to the other countries .

Nobody here seems to have noticed that Harper made these comments while in the US to discuss the progress of the Security and Prosperity Partnership (SPP), a "NAFTA-plus" (or NAFTA on steroids) agreement that pretty much guarantees we pump all of Alberta's oil south of the border as quickly as possible and too bad if we need it ourselves later. It also "harmonizes" Canadian and US standards on everything from the border to the environment. Opposition to the SPP has been growing among BOTH the Canadian left and the American right, and protests were held during the meeting to protest the SPP and the fact that there is currently no congressional or parliamentary oversight of the agreement (ie, none of us get any say in it). Harper is just using the old magician's trick of making you look at the left hand to distract you while he hands over our resources with his right--it's absolutely posturing, and it's meant to diffuse anger at him and at Bush for selling us all out. See: Business group sets and gets its agenda

its all smoke and mirrors.. the little wuss is just spouting off to gain public attention and try and take some heat off the fraud in and out gate that they are facing.. this dont change shit.. .like him seemingly spouting off about the north... what a joke..!

Try and stay on topic, this thread is about Canadian economic growth and self-interest. The election scandal and NAFTA are two different things.

Considering you spew the "Harper is Bush's bitch" line so often , I thought you'd be able to discern the difference.

I am on topic.. this is just posturing by Harper.. like who is he kidding.. he would do what ever george wya said to do.. if it was open NAFTA he would.. you think this little tid bit of showmanship is going to change anyones perspective... doubt it..

Yes, this is pure posturing by Harper and it is as transparent and blatantly in your face as a 2x4 smack across the head by hacksaw Jim Duggan. The bitch harper would no more follow through with any retaliatory action over nafta against his pals in DC then he would piss up a rope and suck the soggy end. Come to think of it, I wish he would.

Maybe someone should let Harper know that as long as he is bush's bitch he can't make threats about nafta for the sake of scoring political points. It's just plain bad form.
