I think an genuine apology for scaring the crap out of the kid(s) is prudent. It would appear that, after a tense few moments at a locked door behind which kids were screaming, at least one officer didn't get his emotions back under control quickly enough.

canuckns canuckns:

10 years old is old enough to be left alone for short periods in their own house.

10 years old is not old enough to be left alone. What do you consider a short period?

DerbyX DerbyX:
The conduct of the police officers was reprehensible and inexcusable. Their reaction to a noise complaint was beyond overkill and their subsequent treatment of the 10 year old was IMO criminal behaviour. The police should be charged with child endangerment and whatever misconduct rules they may have broken.

The officers had no idea who was in the house. There could have easily been armed burglars in the house as opposed to a 10 year child. I don't think they needed to handcuff the child however.

DerbyX DerbyX:
Handcuffing a 10 year old in his own house for a simple noise complaint?

How are the officers supposed to know that the child lives there?

1) 10 years old is old enough to be left alone for short periods. I define a short period to be time for a dinner or movie or perhaps a shopping trip. Obviously the maturity of the child should be taken into question but some parents will agree and some won't.

2) Armed Burglers? This was obviously loud rambunctious noises by a gaggle of kids not creaping sounds emenating from a darkened house. In addition, I'm sure it was quite obviously a surburban home and not the local crack house. Being a student, i've been responsible for many noise complaints and been at houses where they have happened. Not once did the cops act like strom-troopers.

3) Which brings up the last point. Even if you accept they were correct in kicking down the door, their subsequent treatment of the child was reprehensible which they further compounded by handcuffing him.

Anybody spouting nonesense that it was good for the child deserves to be handcuffed everytime the cops even look in their direction under the same idiotic sentiment.

Ride patrol or any time the cops stop you?

They don't know if you are carrying a gun or smuggling dope (a good portion of busts come from routine stops).

Lets err on the side of caution and say that all stops will be conducted by police with drawn handguns and all suspects cuffed before anything else takes place and just to be sure any car pulled over is taken apart to search for smuggled contraban. Probable cause be damned.

That sounds pretty wrong doesn't it even thoug thats what they do in some cases and its perfectly justified.

In this case it wasn't justified.

no cause your child wouldn't so something like that would they derby

maybe they knocked and no one answered the door so the kicked it in. they said when they didn't see anyone they put the guns away.

so they put the kid in handcuffs... not all 10 year olds are cute and innocent.. a lot fo them are smart mouthed punks who need a lesson..

good on em

What this?

$1:
The incident began last Sunday when a neighbour complained about noise when Luke and five friends were playing video games and play-fighting with dried plant stems.

Yes he would. They all would. Thats what kids do and if playing video games and sword fighting with pussy willows is enough of a reason for cops to kick down someones door with guns drawn then handcuff children for the crime of playing jedi with dired plant stems then perhaps Barts is right.

The average citizen needs firearms to protect themselves from cops just as much as criminals.

Are you honestly saying that the playful noises of a bunch of kids playing video games and sword fighting (with light sabre sounds no doubt) with dried plant stems (almost certainly pussy willows) is enough of a reason for cops to react like this?

C'mon. Next you will be telling me its perfectly OK for them to gun down teenagers just for talking back.

Derby..I do believe you just need to stfu sometimes. Believing everything thats said in the newspaper just makes you look like a complete idiot.

Get some life experience and go on a ride along with your local PD. Maybe with the PO you`ll be with you`ll learn something and change your point of view on how it really is out there.

Sorry to be harsh, but people that thinks on knowing every answer for everything is just mind boggling.

Take your own advice fuckwit. I wasn't the guy jumping all over the RCMP over the taser incident in YVR. I didn't see you jumping in to attack those that were nor defend me when I defended the RCMP

I wasn't the one jumping on the cops over the rifle incident but again you didn't wade in and attack those that did.

Don't lecture me about life boy. I've lived abroad and in some sketchy neighbourhoods and I've been on the receiving end of nasty cops and had a friend get even worse. I've also seen alot of good things they've done to. I didn't slag off all cops, just these assholes.

You think you know the answers? Based on what? A lifetime of watching Hill Street Blues and Cagney and Lacey episodes?

What the cops did was wrong. Period.

Handcuffing a 10 year old when it was apparent it was nothing more the play-fighting boys in their own house was criminal.

Don't lecture me boy.

Oh, and dickhead. You are just as guilty believing what you read is true. Its a part of life that you will learn when you grow up.

Seems harsh at first glance. Here in the murder/(former) car theft capital of Canada our city cops have arrested in the last few months a 10 year old who has set over 30 fires, and is bragging he wants to set more, a group of 8 to 12 year old kids with knives bullying other kids, a 14 year old who had just stolen an Avalanche and managed to T-bone a Taxi, killing the cabbie, a 16 year old who stabbed a homeowner after he chased him for throwing snowballs at his house etc, etc. So maybe the Cop over-reacted, and maybe the kid should be happy he wasn't tasered.
