CF not a union? It's the biggest one in the country!

Not too sure about that.

No union dues and no shop stupid err steward collecting them.

General Hillier a great soldier.

DrCaleb DrCaleb:
After reading the General's letter on the CF site, I think I will have to extend the man-crush I have for good Canadian boys like Mike Holmes to General Hillier.

A fine gentleman indeed.

(Top Gear rocks, but Clarkson is a wanker.)

Re Jeremy Clarkson. He's an amusing wanker in the vein of Simon Howell, Brits are just a very sarcastic lot. It's cultural!

On Hillier, great leader and he has elevated the CF status to a level in the public's eye that we have not seen since WW2. Now we are proud of our Forces fighting capability once more. No pansy peace-keeping there.

Now the CF haters such as Zipperfish and Streaker are becoming the minority as the public gets right behind our troops.

He will be missed! I can't see him being a politician though, the rest of the MP types couldn't take such a blunt speaker, plus he could kick most of their sad arses! Might be fun to see though! Lew McKenzie tried but was shut out, you never know though!

SigPig SigPig:
I would guess that a Navy man would be next in line as the last CDS was an Air Force pilot. I am surprised as to his timing because I would have thought that he would wanted to see his tranformation through further than it is now. It is definitely going to be a daunting task for whomever replaces him.

Definitely going to miss him. Too bad I never got a chance to meet him though.

Nice as it would be to have an Admiral as CDS, I doubt that as long as we have ground troops in Afghanistan we'll see one.

Another negative for a Navy CDS is the trepidation of governments to have them placed in that position after most of the Admirals quit, rather than kowtow to Paul Hellyers dream of having everyone in the Military look like the baggage porters at Dorval International Airport.

Either way, let's hope they choose someone who can actually fill the shoes of General Hillier and not some political toady, who's only getting his ticket punched so he can secure a cushy job on his retirement.

He was a good general, and at least he is stepping down peacefully. Going to miss having a "homeboy" in charge :P

There is a sea story that an admiral in the 60's threatened the mayor of Halifax that he would "turn my entire f$%%^ng fleet loose on your city" the next time the cops sat back and watched as a sailor got the crap beat out of him by locals. The last part of the story is true for a fact, the first part??? I do know that realations with the local constab have been great ever since.

Ahhh old time hairy bags!!! :D

I can see why the Mayor and constabulary were quite accommadating, since the last time an entire fleet of matelots was let loose on Halifax it turned into a giant riot, that IMHO Halifax hasn't recovered from yet.

Sadly those days are long gone. Now if you could find and Admiral with spine enough to do something like that, he wouldn't be able to muster the troops, because they'd all be in an ARC or SHARP program.

Freakin touchie feely new Navy.
