Having said that, things should not progress to the point that they have, re-tooling/tweaking of NAFTA wouldn't affect Canada because as things are now, as the US goes so goes Canada as our economies are almost fully integrated.

Go for it. Our "friends" the Arabs tried that in 1972 when we were getting more oil percentage wise than we get from Canada now. There was rationing and inconvience but we managed quite well, and we will manage again when our "friend" Canada shuts off their taps this time.

I recall reading at length a late 19th century Canadian defence plan.

Keep in mind the mentality of the times.
The authurs were British staff officers. They concluded the only contemplated invaders would be the US. In their view the US would invade across the traditional St Laurence corridor.
Their defence plan was thoughtful. Rather than risk damage to Eastern Canadian infrastructure by a miltiary defence there, to entrain up the canadian forces and head to Winterpeg. Without detraining direct the military trains south on connecting track and invade the US heartland . The element of surprise, into a lightly defended area, occupied with a population probably more sympathetic than the North East US.....shortly a settlement would ensue.

Currently, the only support Canada could expect from Europe or the UN would be strongly worded diplomatic notes of protest....really.
If Europe indeed deployed it's military, it would have to make an opposed landing in North America. Urbanites make lousy soldiers regardless the training.

The Euroweenies would be singularly useless in liberating Canada from an aggressor.

Absent the USA they are ill-prepared to defend themselves, let alone Canada. The French, German, and UK militaries readily admit to this fact.

Let's say Europe did want to liberate Canada, it would take them several years to ramp up military production and training to develop the requisite forces to pull this off.

And the entire time the European military was ramping up for war the buildup would be vehemently opposed by the same kind of Eurotrash leftist pacifists who are frequently celebrated by (ironically) too many Canadians.

Talk about being hoist upon one's own petard!

All while Europe would be converting auto factories and etc. to war production and conscripting troops (because we all know damned few Europeans will volunteer for the military!) the very same type of vermin we all too often see on this site would take to the streets with protest signs saying things like:

"No War for Oil!"

I'd be really suprised to see the US pull out of NAFTA, since it seems to favor them when it comes to natural resources.

I have no problem with free trade among LIKE nations, but NAFTA goes too far. For years we have successful trade with the United States but when Mexico was brought into the equation, things started to fall apart. Now we're signing deals with places like China, India, Thailand, etc putting workers in North America in direct competition with cheap foreign labour. They want to renegotiated nafta or they will tear up the deal. hmmm i guess its not much of a deal if one party can just tear it up. And as a farmer as i am nafta hasnt opened any borders for my wheat.

Hear, hear, 95% of what all politicians say on the campagin trail is complete BS and any adult knows it. I doubt it would be the end of the world for anyone if certain parts of NAFTA got re-negotiated anyway. Personally, despite my Tory stripes, I'd support massive taxation and tariffs on any company or product manufacturer that got rid of jobs in North America, sent them to the Third World, and then had the nerve to re-export back to the people they laid off in the first place. Cheap consumer goodies are one thing but the rest of this crap has gone way too far off the rails.
