Oddly enough we were just touching on the pot issue on a different thread. I don’t see the big deal here, safe injection sites are working so why shut them down? Dion has stated that he does not support legalizing cannabis, again so what? Liberals have never suggested “legalizationâ€

$1: Its a bloody vicious circle, insight isnt about a cure, its about harm reduction...lowering the spread of disease, getting people in contact with A&D support and medical support which can lead to change, but it will never be a cure. Underlying issues need to be addressed for an addict to be successful.
We also need to prosecute these asshole pimps and dealers that prey on the vulnerable and put them away for a long time.
Your absolutely right about it being a vicous circle, but the real problem people have with the injection sights is the mostly true perception that they perpetuate a criminal element that preys on the rest of society to feed their habit.
Unfortunately the term "harm reduction" only appears to apply to the addicts and not their victims. So, until they can stop the addicts from committing crimes to feed their habits, people aren't going to be to sympathetic to an addict who just robbed or assaulted them, wandering in to a government funded building for free needles, a shower and maybe a food voucher out of taxpayer funds.
I think the only way were going to get around this whole problem is mandatory detox with a follow up program that keep the addicts off the streets long enough to kick their habits and also ensures them a fair chance at getting back into society.
Otherwise harm reduction will remain just what it is now, harm reduction for the addicts at the expense of the rest of society.

ridenrain ridenrain: Ok. We have some common ground here then. I thought the detox took longer but I guess that's just the chemical dependency. Dumping them back into the same enviroment that made them is just asking for the cycle to repeat.
Do we start up Esendale or the other sanitoriums again?
Good start would be to re-evaluate ADAC and the message it puts forward. They never have seemed to have made up their minds on whether you must go clean for life or if you can be a controlled user. Secondly, there are a few detox centers out there but very few centers that are focused on recovery. In Alberta there is Cliarsholme which is funded (very poorly I might add) by the government, Grand Prairie which is private (costs about 3 grand to go to) and a few other places like Simon house in Calgary which is funded through donations and some government grants. Other than that you either have to go to BC or the states. Hands down more money needs to be spent on rehabilitation.
Oh I should mention that all but Clairholme are focused primarily on alcohol addiction. Clairsholme is a mixed bag from alcohol to hard drugs. The is no center that I am aware of in Alberta that is focused soley on hard drugs.
For that you do have to go to BC or the US which cost big bucks (again any where from 3 to 5 grand). It’s unfortanate and sad that most addicts who seek treatment do so after they hit bottom but that is the reality and taking that into consideration you have to realieze that for most the best treatment is not financaly avalible . Centers like Clairsholme may be free but their program only runs for two weeks! This is not even enough time to get the “easier to treatâ€

Bill_Hicks Bill_Hicks: kenmore kenmore: actually as much as I think pot is ok... there isnt a party in canada that will legalize it... if it was going to be it would be the liberals.. I mean they are the party for all the people... they legalized same sex marriage and instituted gay rights... that is not a neg comment .. I am not homophobic and agree with that issue.. Lmfao, everyone left of the Libs want to legalize it, including the greens.. There's a party dedicated to it... "The Marijuana Party"
Not just the left. The Libertarian Party would legalize it too.

mtbr mtbr: The federal Liberal Party has no intention of advocating the legalization of cannabis, looks like they just lost a bunch more votes to the green party.
that is likely the case , the liberals just lost the drug vote . which is large is some ridings , surprisingly large in many .
so will greens now campaign for legalised marijauna or are they allready doing so ?

Cannabis will be legalized or decriminalized anyway, whether it's now or the near future.
Besides, on the surface, Dion denied legalization but where does he stand on decriminalization?

sorry, I don't believe in safe injection sites.
What is wrong with this province? allowing people to inject illegal drugs into their body "safely" is not something the 'state' should be involved in.
Does this mean if I develop a drinking habit I can get wasted safely? will they take me home and make sure I don't suffocate on my own puke?
I can't stand this type of BS, lock them in a room for 30 days and let them sweat it out cold turkey style.
Addiction is NOT a disease, yes there are people who have a personality that is more prone to addictions (of any kind) but I refuse to see this as a disease why? because THEY HAVE THE CHOICE of injecting, cancer is not something you have control over.
Duct tape a rope that what they need.

Safe injection sites are not simply a place to hand out fresh needles. They have resources available at these sites which are aimed at helping users get off of drugs. I can not personally think of a better way or place to reach out addicts. If we can help prevent the spread of disease while at the same time reaching out to these users then I am all for it.

Addition IS a disease! Look it up buddy. It is not a simple matter of wanting to quit, if it was we wouldn't have addicts.

So? And wouldn't the same apply to decriminalization too? Many times in our history, we've swerved away from American policy and that includes the Cold War, so why would this be any different?
