What's the hot water plan? Geothermal heating?
Water from one of the local pulp mills will be piped a few Km's up river and emptied at the head of the ice jam. It's not really hot water though as they release it at 15c. I think the best it will do is keep the water clear of ice once the jam has been opened.

I'm sure the eco-errorists would have something to say about that! 8O

If anyone is interested, this is the site that has been following the ice jam quite closely. Opinion 250 It's also the site where the lady posted about her search for an icebreaking machine. The website owner forwarded her info to the provincial emergency coordinator, and action was finally taken. It's a good site for Prince George news and they are very quick to update. They have a video of the machine at work.

Pretty awesome. It looks like a floating excavator would also work there.Wonder why they didnt rent a few from Red Deer.

The thing is the water is already released into the Fraser river. That keeps the Fraser in PG relatively free of much ice in the area where it's released. They are just piping it over to the other river that flows through PG.

I'm sure there are a few machines that would have done the job. That's why it amazes us that the "experts" told us we would have to wait until spring thaw, and yet an ordinary citizen of PG came up with a viable solution. Just from a google search.

Why did this river freeze up so bad this year, was it unseasonably cold?

The ice jam began before Christmas, when the temperature dropped down to -30c. Although that is not unseasonable around here. It was a little early though.

The story i heard was there was no use doing anything because the Fraser was frozen over and there was no where for the ice to go. But now it's open they can try this. So hopefully there's no more extreme cold and it stays open and that machine can work, 1 ice cube at a time.

Even with this new toy it will be a tricky business. When the jams clears, there is a lot of force which could swamp this machine and sweep it away. I would like to watch though.

We had that rig or one just like it here a few years ago. Cleared quite a few miles of ice very well and there was absolutely no flooding because of it. I saw it working for about 20 minutes or so and although it was slow it got the job done with out any accidents.
