Bart...Ever been to Churchill...It's quite the place. Insofar as a Russian invasion..Do you remember the movie The Russians are coming?
I've never been to Churchill and I recall seeing
"The Russians Are Coming, The Russians Are Coming!" when I was a wee lad and the movie gave me a big warm fuzzy for the Russians.
Then I grew up and joined the real world where Russia is back to being a not-so-friendly power.
If the Russians are setting up shop in Churchill I will guaran-damn-tee you that they have more on their minds then making nice with selling fertilizer to you.
Yep, I agree, but not in the way one might think I would agree. I agree that the Russians have more on their agenda than simple trade. They could destabilize America further
(than America is already doing to itself) by creating good relations with her primary supplier of raw materials. Than through open warfare and conquest.
If the general Canadian public were to be exposed to more things Russian
DIRECTLY from the Russians instead of through Europe or America then Canadians would start to form an independant relationship with Russia. One based on shared experiances of trade
(a positive), sports, especially hockey
(another positive) and through our mutual understanding of what it really takes to
survive the cold and
thrive in the cold
(another positive).
Take all these positives and you will see the Russian people start to think of Canadians as trading and sporting partners
not just allies of the United States and competitors in hockey. You will also see the Canadian people start to see the Russian people as basically good folk that they have a lot more in common with than most Americans would like to admit. And when you have two groups of people who are intertwined through trade, culture and sports then the liklihood for open warfare is greatly reduced.
It may sound like I'm suffering from a strain of the "tinfoiler" disorder but

hear me out, I wouldn't be suprised if China and Russia were working together. They have a mutual opponent in the USA and
without Mexico providing cheap labour and Canada providing the bulk of America's resources the USA will be greatly weakened over the long haul. Just pay attention to the close ties China is cultivating with Mexico and watch the close ties that I just bet will develop over the next few decades with Russia. And should the American government try anything unilaterally with the Russians through the UN or through trade wars or even through open warfare itself I would doubt that a Canadian populace with a very positive image of the Russian people would offer the USA any kind of support. Be it diplomatically, economically or especially, militarily.
Now, if nothing more happens with Russia as far as trade and cultural exchanges go and the general populace of Canada keeps viewing Russia with an eye of suspicion, getting their information on Russia largely second hand through the USA, Europe and Hollywood then I say nothing really changes. America will have it's closest ally and trading partner and should push come to shove with the Russians, the Russians will face a stronger enemy.
But the Russians, they play a good long game. So we will see how this plays out. However, it will take at least a few decades before any of this really gets going so I will sit back and watch...

Wasn't it a Russian who claimed they would defeat America without firing a single shot?
