EDIT: Going to take an edumacated guess and say that some queries are running real slow. Not enough memory in the DB server or a well placed index might help... but of course, every new index takes up memory.

I hate suggesting Facebook for literally anything at all but that would probably be the best and easiest place to assemble, unless someone has a better idea.
