Longer than that! I recall hunting them in Saskatchewan and Alberta for more than 30 years.

Basically anywhere there is an industrial pig farm, pigs will escape and go feral. Usually coyotes or wolves get them, but once in a while they escape and set up a sustainable herd.

What I've been told by people I know that have tried to cull these critters is that they don't have a breeding season. It's all year long. And if you manage to pin a group of them down and shoot a bunch, the survivors really go at it. There's a population boom.
