He didn't offer to buy Greenland. The Wall Street Journal claims he kind of scratches his chin from time to time and with different degrees of seriousness considers out loud whether or not it would be an idea worth pursuing.

Again Trump has not offered to buy Greenland, however:

$1:
The idea of buying Greenland has been floated before; President Harry Truman offered to buy Greenland from Denmark for $100 million in 1946; the State Department during the tenure of President Andrew Johnson considered buying Iceland and Greenland in 1867.

The man who wants to buy the world. I’m sure he’d sell it again too and manage to bankrupt himself in the process, probably for tax purposes. Where’s David Bowie when you need him?

The thing is the US president should not even be musing aloud on such a takeover which has alarmed and offended a steadfast ally although I’m sure they will play it down. There are enough genuine crises to comment on without creating more, something we know this person does not understand.

The Danes are saying Greenland is open for business, but is not for sale, end of story.

Which is still absurd and idiotic and totally insane, again demonstrating his unfitness for office

He's bloviating as usual. It's physically impossible to walk back anything he's ever said or written. Hence, that tweet.

It's amazing that he thought the Danes would sell Greenland. In a time when the US government is mired in $22 Trillion in debt that they'd be keen on adding another 2 or 3 Trillion to that debt for an Island that require tens of billions of dollars more to upgrade it's infrastructure.

Trump has now cancelled a trip to Denmark, because of the disagreement.

Edit:
Shock in Denmark after Trump, spurned over Greenland, cancels visit

The Queen of Denmark invited him for a State visit. He cancelled. She's pissed.

I recall the tradition of new US Presidents making their first State visit to Canada. But Obama changed that, with his first to Mexico and Second to Canada.

I don't think Trump will have State visit to Canada, at all. And I don't hear many complaints!

I thought Dubya was the first to buck that trend.
