raydan raydan: But I still don't see the need to make "fake" meat.
If I want a meatless burger, I'll make a meatless burger. I agree. But some people like what they are used to. If you want a frankfurter at the pub, that's what you want. If you don't want to eat pork, then you are hosed. If you can have a frank at the pub, that isn't made of pork, then you'll buy that. (and there is absolutely no way to make Cilantro taste good)

raydan raydan: I thought you didn't like processed food, Doc. Why not? I prefer whole foods, but I think anything in moderation is just fine.

I like Cilantro but I'll prefer Cilantro seeds or ground seeds. I'll put fresh Cilantro in recipes that cook for a while.

I don't mind the seeds. But there is no preparation I have found to make the fresh leaves edible.

raydan raydan: I thought you didn't like processed food, Doc. $1: pea protein isolate, expeller-pressed canola oil, refined coconut oil, water, yeast extract, maltodextrin, natural flavors, gum arabic, sunflower oil, salt, succinic acid, acetic acid, non-GMO modified food starch, cellulose from bamboo, methylcellulose, potato starch, beet juice extract (for color), ascorbic acid (to maintain color), annatto extract (for color), citrus fruit extract (to maintain quality), vegetable glycerin. Notice that there isn't actually any plants in the Beyond Meat ingredients... at least nothing that counts in the quantity of plants you should eat every day. ![huh? [huh]](./images/smilies/icon_scratch.gif) The first ingredient is pea protein isolate. Peas are a plant aren't they? The isolation is basically just running ground up peas through water, which separates the starch and fibre out.

If you put those ingredients on a bottle of weed killer people would be up in arms claiming it caused cancer. The only things on that list which I recognizable as actual food is salt, beet juice and citrus extract. Most of the rest of it is literally the crap that's being vilified when put any other food products as filler. And, given that these things aren't exactly actual plants I'm assuming that they're greatest contribution to society will be to cause intestinal distress and diarrhea. So given I'm not a garbage can or a Panda they can keep their "beyond meat" which I assume is a bit of misnomer since it should really be called "beyond plants".

Water. Gum arabic is sap from a plant. Sunflower oil, given. acetic acid is a major component of vinegar. Food starch, likely corn starch or something like it. Methylcellulose is a thickening agent, ascorbic acid is vitamin C. Most of the burger is pea protein isolate and various oils (probably for taste) and various starch based additives (read plants) (probably for consistency and so it doesn't fall apart). This is what happens when you have stupid campaigns like "if you can't pronounce it, you shouldn't eat it".

A lot more palatable than the red food dye which is made from crushed beetles. (not even making that up!) https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Carmine
