As a bonus, the NSA, KGB and Mossad can use them to listen in on your important conversations with your cat.

Pssst.... I think you mean the FSB. KGB doesn't exist.

That's what they would want you to think. 8)

Come to think of it, what the acronym for the Chinese secret police? No one knows! That's how to properly run a 'secret' police.

DrCaleb DrCaleb:
Now, why would you need always connected internet and a microphone to control the heat in your home? Was there some way it was done before that wasn't working? Hmmmmm.

Nest has always had constant internet access. I'd assume microphone is for eventual google assistant tie in.

My thermostat is pre-programmed to my preferences, and has no internet access. Conversely, it also has no internet attack vulnerabilities. And it runs for more than a year on two AA batteries.

Technology does not always make things better.

It's also not a Nest. It having internet access isn't new. It's been like that for like 8 years. I use it so that if I'm going away for a few days, I can change the temp in my house to much colder (or warmer in the summer) and then change it when I'm on my way home and have it at the desired temp when I get there.

If you setup your Nest, than change the Nest wifi settings (delete the password), you are quite secure...and, the Nest will run the set program until you change it again, regardless of connectivity. You will lose the ability to change on the fly, but if you are really concerned.

Little chromatic bitch really doesn't like it if a different network tries to access it while it is 'trying to connect' to an existing, but unreachable network.

The only way to 'connect', at that point is with physical contact of that specific Nest product. Really, if you are already in the house, thermostat control is the least of my worries.

I'm not quite sure why we are talking about the thermostat or protect products though. All of the sources only find a mic in the Secure product, which is a different add on.

And as I said above, Google recent announced the assistant coming to the Secure. Not all that surprising, any centrally located product from google at this point is likely coming with a planned assistant tie in. Assume everything has a microphone going forward.

That was the crux of the problem. Their entire security line did have a microphone, but they failed to include the mic in the spec sheet. All of them.

People didn't know that the 'Nest' line sent information back to Google. Nest was in people's homes before Google bought it, and they changed some things in the process.

So now it's revealed that 'Nest Secure' has microphones in everything. Google has had other privacy concerns, such as always tracking Android phones even when you turn tracking off. That doesn't inspire confidence when Nest says they don't share data with Google.

Precisely.

For example, in general, your personal information can only be collected, used and disclosed with your knowledge—and often your consent—for legitimate purposes. It must also be stored, shared and disposed of in a way that keeps it secure and confidential.
