CHICAGO — Hip-hop megastar Kanye West told his Twitter followers that he was "distancing" himself from politics even as he sent a big check to boost a Democratic mayoral hopeful in his hometown of Chicago.
West tweeted this week that he realizes "I've been used to spread messages I don't believe in." That follows his Oval Office visit last month during which he dropped an expletive while talking with President Donald Trump.
State campaign records show West gave $126,460 to Amara Enyia's mayoral campaign, a week after he donated $73,540 and appeared with her for a sidewalk news conference on Chicago's South Side. He didn't speak and left after about five minutes.

Kanye West’s eyes are ‘wide open’ following backlash over his support for Donald Trump in recent months.
The rapper recently announced that he was distancing himself from politics, a decision he apparently made in the wake of the Tree of Life synagogue shooting and MAGAbomber capture. According to Hollywood Life, the two incidents were ‘really jarring for Kanye’.
‘It got Kanye thinking, and the conclusions he came to were really unsettling and disturbing to him,’ a source told the outlet.
The insider said that the President’s ‘unfiltered’ way of speaking and lack of political background ‘really appealed to Kanye’s creative sensibilities’. The 41-year-old has realized, however, that supporting the former reality star comes at a cost.
‘Kanye’s realized there’s a very high price to pay for the rhetoric that’s being spoken by the president he was endorsing, and it’s dawned on him that he can’t just pick and choose parts of Trump’s agenda that he likes; it’s all or nothing,’ and insider said.
The I Love It rapper has also decided to distance himself from conservative political figures, including Candace Owens. He made that decision after the conservative pundit attached Kanye’s name to her Blexit campaign, which encouraged black Americans to separate themselves from the Democrats.
‘Kanye’s not happy that he’s being used as the poster child for Candace’s campaign without his consent. He’s totally not down with that and he feels exploited. The whole situation has left a really bad taste in his mouth,’ the insider said.
In a tweet, Kanye denounced Blexit saying he ‘never wanted any association’ and has ‘nothing to do with it’.
