A second-degree murder charge has been laid in the fatal attack that left a Winnipeg bus driver dead.

Brian Kyle Thomas, 22, was arrested Tuesday following the stabbing death of Winnipeg Transit operator Irvine Fraser, 58. He has also been charged possession of a weapon for dangerous purpose and failure to comply with a probation order.

Fraser pulled up to the last stop of his shift on Tuesday, went to the back of the vehicle to wake someone up, and then chaos progressed to violence, say police and the head of the Winnipeg Transit union.

Thomas was arrested not far from the scene, at a bend on the frozen Red River that runs adjacent to the University of Manitoba campus.

According to court documents, he has a long list of previous charges for weapons, as well as assault, robbery, and uttering threats.

I told you, Coulter's rule is bullshit. There's any number of reasons why on any given day the police might not give the name to the media. Off the top of my head:

1) Not sure what his real name is

2) Not sure they have the right person

3) Don't want to tip off other possible suspects

5) Suspect is person of interest in another ongoing investigation (e.g. gang activity)

4) Privacy concerns (minor, mental health, etc.)

5) Police just give whatever details they happen to have on hand at the time of the press release then move on to other things
