Interesting example...since tartans were appropriated from another culture, no? Both the man skirt and the patterning of clothe (plaid/tartan) originate from outside of Scotland.
Cultural appropriation is how cultures evolve, even when the appropriation is made in jest.

Cultural appropriation is how cultures evolve, even when the appropriation is made in jest. That's similar to saying the Irish invented the bagpipes and introduced them to the Scots, who have yet to see the joke.

Strange... IN Inverness, Nova Scotia, they have the Colaisde na Gàidhlig. I've been there a few times and you can buy the full costume, in your choice of 250 tartans that they make on site. If you wear the kilt because you embrace the culture, I don't see a problem... having lived in NS 13 years, I wore it quite a few times... and as you know, I'm not Scottish. If your intention is to mock the Scots, that's a different story.

Jesus Christ, this has been the lead story on CBC for two days now, spawning four articles. To recap: Somewhere in Canada, some young people had a private party and dressed up in racial stereotypes. That's it. The most important fucking story in the country for two days running.
Really?
Kind of makes me sympathetic to the "mainstream media" stuff from the right. What about the fentanyl crisis killing hundreds in BC? How about the young woman that got her arm blown off at Standing Rock? No, what really matters is that somebody dressed up in an offensive manner somewhere in Canada.
What is this obsession with identity politics? Does it matter to everyone but us white males, maybe? I don't get it.

Or the child poverty rates. Any number of issues are more important Han what some dumbasses did at a private party.

Lemmy Lemmy: First, no, you can't dress up for Halloween in anything that promotes a cultural stereotype...unless you're an asshole looking to stir shit. Like it or not, it's not 1965 anymore. Hey, what happened to the libertarians that believed in liberty, even if the particular liberty expressed means being exposed as some kind of an idiot? Dumb and insensitive aren't crimes, yet, and as icky as they can be doesn't mean they should be considered crimes either.

No dispute there. But when a university moves to punish or sanction some kid for being a dummy then it's a lot more than just embarrassing them for being stupid, especially if it ends up tagged on their academic record and can affect their post-grad employment prospects. This is what bothers me the most about the puritanical zeal of the alt-left in punishing harmless stupidity. It's kind of being forgotten that these are really still just kids being kids. If there's no damage done to person or property then it shouldn't be hammered down on as hard as if it's some 50-year-old elected bozo from Podunk County mouthing off on Facebook about "the Joo$" or "that goddamn n****r in the White House". They're still young so cut them some slack for being goofy.
tl;dr - Yes, kick someone out of school if he's spray-painting swastikas all over the place, but don't be so harsh if all he's done is photographed wearing a sombrero at a house party.

I still want to know exactly what stereotype I'm perpetuating by wearing a kilt.

Which is more wrong:
a) Dressing up as a shiek for a Halloween drinking party
b) Dressing an Asian woman up as an 18th century French soldier for a job at a National Park
?? Just sayin'

Got a kick out of Montana's in Surrey. Almost 1/2 the staff is East Indian all dressed in cowboy attire. That was worth more than the slop they serve for food.
