Didn't coal companies who invested millions into new plant etcs say they planned on fighting these closures?

I've never heard that. They can fight it all they want, but there is no right to have a market re-opened against consumer will just so bad business decisions can become profitable again.

New poll shows strong opposition to Alberta carbon tax
A new poll shows deep disapproval for Alberta’s incoming carbon tax, but the NDP government is hopeful residents will ultimately see the merits of the levy.

Is it really against consumer will when Albertans are starting to have second thoughts on the Governments climate leadership plan?

Consumers everywhere are demanding more renewable energy. That isn't affected by their disapproval of a carbon tax. But they also demand a cleaner environment, and Carbon tax will achieve that, just like a tax on Sulphur Dioxide fixed the Acid Rain problem. So, they can't have one without the other.

It sucks, but that's reality. If a government wants to force a reduction in something, whether it's acid rain, smoking or drinking, then taxing it is the way to get that reduction. Where they failed was not making it revenue neutral like the BC Carbon tax. I think if they did that, more people would be on board with it.

Insane to keep using coal anyway when we're literally drowning in natural gas because we can't sell it to the US anymore. This isn't the 1990's when gas cost five times as much as it does today. Then in made some sense to use coal because it was way cheaper and money in gas exports was huge. Not the same situation today, where there probably isn't going to be a big price rally for gas in our lifetimes. New plants will put thousands back to work building them with the happy side effect of drastically cutting emissions. Win-win all around.

Before my life was shattered over the last couple of years this is what I was thinking of doing for myself, to get the hell out of the city where everything's getting stupider with every passing day and going to a place where you don't have to listen to traffic driving by all night long.

I'm trying to sell my place right now, and I'm thinking the same thing. Either moving closer to the city to take advantage of transit, or moving a little farther away to get away from the craziness. There are a couple nice small towns (pop: 1000 - 3000) that are only 10 minutes more highway travel than I have now, and prices are pretty good.

I like having lots of open space around me, the hawks in the sky eating the neighbours poodles and coyotes eating their cats. What I don't like is having to maintain my own water purification and sewage systems. And heating my place in the winter with propane. I could do without that headache too.

Lisa and I are starting to think it's time to leave California. Our jobs are filled with crazy people and the roads around here are filled with fucking morons who think they're going to get a trophy for Winning The Commute.

I'm sick of it. Getting on time to go.

Do it! I commute 40 minutes - at 4 in the morning. Traffic is light (some idiots, but not many), parking is great, and I have afternoons free to grocery shop or make doctor appointments. No one is free swimming at the pool . . . Low stress, and I love that my job accommodates me living this schedule.

Lowering my stress levels also means I get to live a more full life, for the same pay. If you don't have to participate in the rat race, don't!
