Nope, just don't leave out attractants that draw the bears out of their natural habitat. A lot cheaper and more effective. Just a suggestion that y'all think about how that might apply to your country.

Where I live right now there are plenty of bears around but surprisingly there are never any issues. Apparently several years ago one bear had to be shot when it became a nuisance after it broke into someone's freezer and got a taste of what humans could provide food-wise. No issues since then as everyone is bear-aware and take the measures to avoid negative interactions. Sightings are common and word gets around if there is a mama with cubs nearby just so everyone is more aware to watch out for them and give them space.

It's too bad when attacks happen and both humans and the bears pay the price. As human populations grow and expand into what was at one time the bear's natural neighborhood the encounters become more frequent and inevitable.

Sounds like Revelstoke tho is much worse than normal, because the residents don't take any care in preventing bear attractants. They're coming off as a bunch of yahoos who would rather shoot bears than take care.

Look at some of the pics in that article. It's a 'how to' on what not to do.

That's why they have to shoot bears. It's a friggen smörgåsbord. The bears can't help themselves. :(

DrCaleb DrCaleb:

Totally understood. For 25 years now it's been illegal to kill a mountain lion in California. You have to let Fish & Game handle it if there's a problem. The problem is that Fish & Game only acts if the lions are causing trouble in urban areas. If you're in a rural area then screw you.

Thus a number of people I know just quietly deal with the problem and bury it somewhere or dump it down an old mineshaft (lots of those around here).

Can't always wait for the government to do something.

Look at Louisiana where the state and Federal governments were doing next to nothing for the flood victims so the 'Cajun Navy' formed up to go rescue people.

What's the first thing the government did once they got moving? Did they go rescue people? No, they had the state police order the civilian rescuers to stand down or face getting arrested. Right now there's a bunch who are defying the police and they're rescuing people and bringing in supplies anyway.

If the state police arrest someone now then it won't just be black people shooting cops anymore because the people in Louisiana are PISSED right now.

I imagine it's about the same thing up in Revelstoke. How much do you have to put up with before you deal with the problem yourself?
