The people that really get hose by labor laws, or lack thereof, are the agricultural workers. Since at one time the govt used to press gang people into fighting fires, I wonder what the regs, or lack thereof, are for them?

They should get better than what they signed on for. We should be paying them what we pay our own people for this service.

True. Still, they signed a contract, and $50 a day is pretty good money in SA.

WTF? Minimum wage in Alberta is $11.20 an hour or $89.60 for an eight hour day. Any contract specifiying less should be illegal, right?

Then how the hell is it fair to pay these guys less just because they're from SA?

They were working 12's.

Notley vows South African firefighters will be paid as promised

THE CANADIAN PRESS

“I can say right now that every hour that every firefighter from South Africa — or anywhere else — has worked on these fires will be compensated in accordance with our laws in this province,” Notley said in Calgary.

The South African group that employs the 300 workers said they would be leaving after only a week on the job because of a pay dispute. The organization Working on Fire said senior managers were coming to Canada to address concerns and oversee the return.

Notley said the province contracted with the agency to pay the firefighters roughly $170 a day. That works out to $21.25 an hour for an eight-hour shift. Food, lodging and travel were also covered by the government.

Firefighter Ditiro Moseki told Edmonton radio station CHED that he’s been working 12-hour shifts and getting paid $50 a day. He said a news story he and some of his co-workers saw from South Africa says the employer is paying them $21 an hour.

“Comparing the $21 per hour to that $50 that they are going to give us today, there is a serious difference there,” he said.....

South African firefighters paid according to Alberta laws, government says

Nearly 300 firefighters from South Africa who came to Canada last month to help fight the massive forest fire in the Fort McMurray area have been paid according to Alberta labour laws, the government said Wednesday.

Officials with the South African agency Working on Fire have confirmed for the Alberta government that the workers have been paid.

. . .

When the pay dispute came to light, Alberta Premier Rachel Notley said it was "not acceptable" that firefighters were not making wages in accordance with Alberta labour laws.

Notley promised they would be compensated fairly.

I know, right! Making promises to be fair and equitable - then keeping those promises!

They are going to make other governments look bad.

Think about it, Rachel had plane loads of Mexicans waiting to come up here, no one works cheaper than them, but yet she goes to the other side of the world and brings these guys in. IMO they got caught cheating out and came up with this dog and pony story making her all righteous and all.
