You can't make Jesus gender neutral.

Why not?

National anthems are silly. There's no need for them anyway.

I will never understand how nationalism is such a bad thing. I like the idea of anthem, I just think our current one sucks.

Since everybody seems to think it's hockey and Tims that makes us Canadians, shouldn't we have a song about that?

True patriot love, in all thy sons command is obviously not talking about Jesus, but the sons of Canada, ie the males. If the women don't have true patriot love, nobody cares. And how exactly do you command love?

The last verse absolutely has to go - just Christian pie in the sky. (works just as well for Muslims).

The people who want this changed are those that don't give a fuck about tradition and are woefully ignorant of our history.

In short, I'm not even remotely surprised at those supporting a change.

Sounding mighty First Nations there - gotta keep the traditional ways, like promoting one religion over others, keeping women in their place, doctrine of discovery, residential schools, and so on. I bet there are traditions you don't agree with, but the ones you like, you want everybody to agree with.

Written in 1906, revised in 1908... revised twice since then, the last time in 1980.

So it seems that a lot of people didn't give a fuck about tradition... strangely enough, the French version has never changed. PDT_Armataz_01_27

If the only argument you have for doing something is that we've always done it that way, you don't have much, do you? "Evolution, we don't need no stinking evolution. Chemotrophy is plenty good for me."

Once again.

Care to show where I even hinted at that?
Don't bother, we both know you're just a lying, trolling piece of shit who NEVER bothers to show the " supposed" statement or offer a retraction.

Funny how a national anthem is supposed to celebrate a nation and they all sound like military marches or funeral dirges.
I'll nominate the Bare Naked Ladies and Rush to submit a new one. Any other nominations?

I thought "in all thy son's command" was a Jesus reference anyway? You can't make Jesus gender neutral.

The PC folks will give it one hell of a try.

OK, I'm game. If the line is referring to Jesus (it's actually all they sons) why is it plural? Just how many sons does God have? I thought Jesus was the one and only. And the line is "true patriot love, in all thy sons command." We want Jesus to be a Canadian patriot? Our American friends won't think much of that.

So, bs. The line is saying that Canada should command true patriot love in all its sons. Daughters, who cares.

I read it like: true patriot love, in all thy sons' command. As in, the command of thy sons should hold true patriot love. I was thinking more like a military reference. Military is/was mostly guys so this would make some sense. Anyway I don't think they should change it.

nwrong. The song is telling Canada to command true patriot love in its sons. Not the commanders of the sons to feel the love. Ie the normal way to say it would be "Oh, Canada, command true patriot love in all your sons. Command in the same sense something/someone commands respect.

And yes, the song is militaristic.
