Yeah but IIRC it costs a fortune and the speeds are so slow it's not good for much.

$60 for 20gb/mo ;)
Still better than nothing.
Where I live, a lot of people live off grid. Heat their house with propane, create their own power source. No phone line, no power line, no internet.

Better than nothing doesn't cut it.
Sort of like saying in 1999 that a party-line phone was better than nothing when people were already using dialup Internet on those.
Pick and chose between an evil socialist commie govt agency to deliver decent rural internet service or using govt money to build the infrastructure and then hand it off to the big telcos to profit from.
No other solution, the free market can't deliver. Just like it couldn't do rail service, telephones, hydro, gas or ferries in past decades.
