DrCaleb DrCaleb:
BartSimpson BartSimpson:
Why not just install speed bumps near the school?

The speeds here just recently went to 30 in school zones. There might be some speedjumps already, but those tend to cause rear end collisions when soccer mom in her 'SUV' stops nearly dead so she doesn't wreck the suspension on her Jeep.

Where are you located? The school zone speed limit has been 30 km/h around the Lower Mainland for as long as I can remember, as for the speed bumps, they have started showing up in school zones and parks, usually adjacent to crosswalks and also used on side streets used as shortcuts around high traffic areas. As for the traffic circles, roundabouts, they are becoming more prevalent in lower traffic areas in lieu of stop signs or 4 way stops. The biggest problem with them is too many people don't know how to use them, or just assume they have the right of way.

I believe that Dr. C was meaning that the school zones just recently came into effect, for this given year, on September 2.

As for speed bumps. The primary schools of issue (this is an Edmonton wide problem) are all on ETS bus routes. Sadly, one of the worst offenders (by complaint, not by charge) is the ETS buses themselves.

Don't even get me started as to why Edmonton can't have traffic circles...you just can't fix stupid, and far too many of our drivers are stupid.

Edit to add:

To give everyone an idea of how bad excessive speed in school zones is, in Edmonton...2,099 vehicles were caught speeding through our school zones...on the FIRST FUCKING 4 DAYS OF SCHOOL...seriously...sometimes I wonder if this city should just ban personal driving all together. We just can't seem to get enough people to follow the law.

The idiots in my neck of the woods constructed a roundabout as a trial.
They then installed 4 way stop signs on the roundabout. Go figure.

No, I meant the speed limit in school zones in Edmonton was recently changed to 30km/h. Previously, it was 50. Edmonton bylaws superseded the Highway Traffic Act as to speed limits in residential and school zones.

The speed limit in Edmonton is 50, unless otherwise posted. Including residential areas!

In Edmonton, we just put up traffic lights! That makes traffic circles so much better!

Omg, that is kind of ridiculous!

I didn't even know about that, as I was taught that when you saw a school, you slowed down. I never gave it any thought past that (as to the specific legalities).

That explains a lot of honking I have received over my driving life.

You haven't fully arrived until you have the traffic lights inside the circle,

like some I have seen in Spain.

There's a round-about in St. Jacobs, ON...the heart of Mennonite country in Ontario. You haven't witnessed chaos 'til you've seen horse-drawn carriages, transport trucks and the bumper-to-bumper morning commuter rush into Kitchener competing to execute the traffic circle at the same time.
