If we're going to fuss about Senate expense scandals, we should be doing the same investigation on the MP's. Although that would likely lead to mass rioting and tar and feather parties.

Bring it! We could use some good old fashioned public shaming!

Yep. Although it would just further corrode public trust in politicians without probably any meaningful reforms. Good way to ruin a country is for people to not respect their government, just start doing what they want.

I guess in zippoland. Other places it just leads to collapse. Because what people want often runs counter to what the country needs. It's already a problem in how we choose our representatives, would just be worse if people really didn't care about the govt.

Do you see how your sentences don't make logical sense?

Government is a representation of the people! If the people want it, the government should be doing it! If what they want isn't in their best interests (like Greece), then the government has a public relations problem.

And respect is earned, not automatic. ;)

Yes, but. That is the reason we have representative democracies, not direct democracies. It's been understood that govt acts on a brake on the immediate impulses of people. If that brake goes, ba boom. Also govt is about making compromises, to recognize that there are differences of opinion among the population. Govt never has a 100% mandate. Take that away, nobody compromising, and again, ba boom.

Maybe. But I happily pursue happiness, I respect my government and I'm a pretty darn fine citizen of Canada, if I do say so myself!

I know, I know, you're a free range libertarian. Except you follow all sorts of rules, even ones you disagree with, because you recognize it makes for a far better environment to raise your kids. And for your own soft middle aged ass, not being the young punk you once were.

Pretty close. Although I'd call myself a "pragmatic liberatarian". I don't mind having my freedoms curtailed for the greater good as long as you make a pretty darn good case.

Spy on me based on the one-in-a-zillion chance I'll get bloawn up by a terrorist in Canada: not a good case.

Stop traffic for no other reason to ask me if I've been drinking: good case.

I guess you could call me a praghole, proghole.

Actually we used to just call you guys, "Liberals" before the ,for real, "progholes" hijacked your ideology for what was once thought of as the Communist agenda.

But if you guys want to hide out with our Libertarians now that's cool. Just be careful. The Progressives are trying to move in there now too. There's a defence though. When you see a Prog calling himself a Libertarian you must point at him and laugh. Against laughter they have no defence. It's our Karate Kid posture of the crane.

Oh and welcome to the right wing. Took you long enough.
