It's a unique and quite beautiful little corner of this country. You see forest and wildlife there, like Tulip trees and Flying Squirrels (yes, "Rocky"), that are native to Virginia and the Carolinas and don't occur anywhere else in Canada. It's very different from what most of you have experienced in our country.

That's not too hard to believe as it sits at the same latitude as Northern California at 41°57′51″ N.

You'll find the northern flying squirrel in most of Canada. It's southern cousin is only found in southern Ontario/Québec.

It's one of the few places left this far north that I've seen that still has remnants of old growth Carolinian forest. Some of those old trees have an almost prehistoric look to them.

As was mentioned before though, this will be a good opportunity for bow hunters as well. Most of the people I knew in Essex and Kent Counties that hunted, primarily hunted with a bow.

We're in a microclimate zone here in Oakville that sustains Carolinian forest. It isn't quite as lush and otherworldly as Pelee but it's a long way from the Shield.

Well, really, 200 to 300 Km does not seem that far in Canadian terms.

S'truth! It's a big place! 200-3000 Kms of longitude is mostly meaningless. That much latitude is not. The difference between the Shield and Pelee is about 3 degrees ... which is a hell of a lot at these latitudes.
