Thanos Thanos: The excessive taxes in socialist-stupid BC are so painful, in a rectally-speaking sort of way, that we're usually in a rush to get home to sit on an icepack. Hooch is cheaper on our side of the Rockies. And I don't mean moonshine. Alberta has higher sin taxes than bc.

Regina Regina: Strutz Strutz: It makes no difference what the speed limit is. There will always be people that will go over it. There will always be people that will go under it. There will always be a hundred other factors that can contribute to accidents. $1: the multi-vehicle crash that closed the highway at the Great Bear Snowshed It seems to me that that is a section of that highway that is a frequent one for accidents. It's one of the few sections that has a few curves. ^This^ If it makes no diff what the limit is, why have one at all? Raise the speed limit and you'll still have some people exceeding it and some going under it, but all at an average greater speed = less reaction time and greater force on impact. Canadians can't handle higher speeds, we're not trained for it. I'm in the left lane, going over the speed limit with people ahead of me and to the right of me, and I still get people sitting on my ass trying to push me faster. If I leave too large a gap, that same numbnuts will try to pass me on the right, cutting off the right lane traffic and then me as he pulls in the left lane ahead of me, only to have to brake because the car that was in front of me is now in front of him, Or, I'm in the right lane, doing about the speed limit, and some idiot passes on the left, cuts into the right lane in front of me and then slows down, so that i have to deactivate my cruise. Yahoos pass me going at a great clip, maybe in a van or pulling a trailer, then there's a slight curve in the highway, and ooops, time to slow down to way below the speed limit because curves are scary. I have to brake for them, then as the road straightens out, off they speed off again. On a two lane highway with passing lanes, numbnuts drives real slow, then when the passing lane starts boots it so you have to really exceed the speed limit to pass him. Two lane starts again and there he is, chuggling along again, because there might be curves up ahead. 110 always seemed like a decent speed on the Coq. If there are sections that have frequent accidents, that's certainly not an argument for increasing the speed - it certain won't reduce accidents. We can't handle the speed. Our cars can, our drivers, as a group, can't.

People deride us for oil income, but our dirty little secret is that 49% of Alberta's income comes from tax on Tobacco, Alcohol and lottery purchases. (it's from all the imported Newfies!)

I can't believe that.

Unsound Unsound: Thanos, perhaps out of compasssion, has also neglected to mention that half those Alberta plates in BC have BC drivers. The bad driving likely stems from the fact they couldn't afford a car when they still lived and, barely, worked in BC There's always been a logical reason for the exodus of BC'ers to AB. Hard to make a living in BC when the grow-op is the only business left in town and they usually ain't hiring.

Cars are better designed for speed and safety as well as the roads of the 60s. Yet the only thing to increase is the dollar value of fines for the same strips of pavement until now. Fatalities will happen no matter what the speed limit is. There should also be fines for drivers going too slow as well.

Regina - There is.
The curves on the hill are one of three spots along the whole run I suggested that the "advisory" signs be set to 90 or 100. It's very easy to lose yourself coming down that hill.

Canadian_Mind Canadian_Mind: Regina - There is. And I've yet to hear of any police officer writing that ticket in over 30 years. $1: The curves on the hill are one of three spots along the whole run I suggested that the "advisory" signs be set to 90 or 100. It's very easy to lose yourself coming down that hill. Or we could actually have some real driver education, not the crap we have now, to force the bad drivers off the road. I'm a firm believer that nearly 50% of people licenced to drive in Canada, shouldn't be. That number jumps to 99.9% if we only counted female drivers under 25 who love to text and drive.

I do recall that was the motivation behind a significant re-write of the laws; to make it more enforceable. $1: Or we could actually have some real driver education, not the crap we have now, to force the bad drivers off the road. You're right. I do believe that drivers education should be more structured. Teach it through public schooling. Make learning how to drive is a requirement for graduation. From there, have specific licences or qualifications for classes of vehicles.

There should be a highway portion to the driver's exam. As well as being able to demonstrate some basic understanding of the mechanical workings of an automobile.
In BC tho, we allow immigrants to drive with Chinese licenses. The cops were fining them for it, but were told to stop by the govt. We've had many scandals of people bribing officials to get their license. We allow them to write their test using an interpreter. We let people with truck driving licenses from other countries take a very cursory exam to drive trucks here, so we had schools in Surrey that taught their students how to forge those foreign licenses, including driving over them with the truck to make them look old.
Fix that before you raise speed limits. Ridiculous to say there will be fatalities with any speed limit - how many fatalities is the question.

Will be easy to compare. There's existing data for future use. In five or ten years you'll have your answer.

You are right andy, there should be a highway portion to the exam. Why isn't there? The bribery thing... oh yeah. I remember a particular scandal at the Richmond DMV years ago that resulted in many people having to be tested again. It was a total joke. Canadian_Mind Canadian_Mind: You're right. They should raise the speed limit on Hwy 16 from 100 to 110. THen maybe those fucktard from Hooterville will go 80.... FYI a double solid line means no passing, it's unsafe to pass because there's a hill or curve you can't see over or around. That's ALL it means. It doesn't mean OMG SLOW DOWN OR YOU'LL ROLL OVER AND EXPLODE IN A BALL OF FLAMES. Get up to the fucking limit, push the goddam button and all you need to do is STEER and enjoy the scenery you idiots!
