Not eerie, nor WTF. Dutch humour combined with nerves. MH370 is still fresh in everyone's memory. I assume many, many Malaysian passengers have said something similar before boarding. Thankfully, nothing happened to their flights...

RIP

Sorry, Brenda, very unlikely.

Separatists bragged on social media that they had shot down a Ukrainian plane, until, woops, those posts disappeared. Also Ukraine has intercepted phone calls where the separatists bragged about it and then started sounding confused about what exactly they had shot down.

Apparently enough satellite info to determine if the missile came from Ukraine or Russia.

Why was the plane flying over that part of Ukraine? It's a major air corridor.

$1:
Malaysia Airlines Flight 17 reportedly crashed over the volatile region of Ukraine where government forces have been battling pro-Russian separatists.

Ukrainian officials have said the plane was shot down by the separatists, raising the possibility commercial aircrafts flying through the area could be vulnerable to potential ground-to-air attacks.

Even more worrying is that the planned path that brought MH17 near the disputed region, known as airway L980, is one of the most popular and most congested air routes in the world. L980 is a key link between major international hubs in Europe, such as London Heathrow, Amsterdam Schiphol, and Frankfurt, and Asian megacities, like Singapore, Mumbai, and Hong Kong. The airspace over Ukraine is traveled by virtually every commercial flight from Western Europe to south Asia.

Because of this, the crash could have a significant effect on commercial air travel with hundreds of flights expected to be affected by this incident. For example, at just one hub, Amsterdam's Schiphol Airport, which was the origination point of MH17, there are dozens of flights either en route or scheduled to take L980 in the next 24 hours.

Lufthansa, Europe's largest airline, has already rerouted its planes. An airline representative told Business Insider it ordered all flights to avoid Ukrainian airspace and divert south over Romania in light of the MH17 crash. Virgin Atlantic, KLM, and British Airways have not replied to our requests for information. But recent radar images of Ukraine indicate that other airlines have already followed Lufthansa's lead and ordered their planes to leave the area.

Someone should "loan" Ukraine a dozen "Wild Weasels" and they can turn anything on the ground that paints a plane into a smoking crater.

Here's fun.

http://english.pravda.ru/news/world/16-07-2014/128061-canada_fighter_aircraft_ukraine-0/#.U8klmdq9KSP

$1:
The Ukrainian combat aviation received reinforcements from Canada. The Canadian government proposes to deliver nearly 20 combat aircraft CF-18A to the Ukrainian military.

The information appeared on social networks. Russian English-language television channel Russia Today reported the same.

These 20 aircraft can be delivered to the Ukrainian side for free, as they had been written off from service at the Air Forces of Canada in connection with the purchase of new aircraft. In addition, Canada offers to send a dozen experts to Ukraine to train Ukrainian pilots and perform aircraft maintenance, the Press of Ukraine reports.

McDonnell Douglas CF-18 Hornet is a multirole fighter of the Royal Canadian Air Force, developed on the basis of US fighter bomber F/A-18 Hornet. The plane was produced by McDonnell Douglas in 1982-88 years; 138 aircraft had been produced in total. The aircraft had taken part in combat operations during the Gulf War, the bombing of Yugoslavia and the international military operation in Libya.

The Canadian Air Force had lost the total of 18 CF-18 Hornet during operation, although there were no combat losses incurred.

And ^^ that's why RT(Tass) and Pravda aren't reliable news sources.

The civil aviation authority gave all planes a minimum ceiling of 32,000feet for safe flying over the area. This aircraft was at 33,000. The Buk would also have seen it's radar transponder and identified it as a passenger aircraft, and also known that local military transports would not be flying at that altitude.

Both Russia and the US should know where the missile originated from as well. They monitor that sort of stuff.

I'm starting to rule out 'accident' as the cause.

Unless the missile launched itself I'm not sure it can be called an "accident".

Some silly wanker thought it was a good idea to pull the trigger.

I don't think anybody ruled it in. Unless by accident you mean poorly trained or trigger finger separatists (or drunk ones, this being Ukraine and all) thought it was a Ukrainian plane, as was indicated by some of their communications.

Good idea, although why loan them - let's just do it ourselves. At the same time, we can 'accidentily' wipe out their tanks and other heavy weapons.

Maybe it'll teach Putin that arming separatists willy nilly isn't a good idea.
