He was a particularly whacko professor that told us things like maps are racist. Feelings trumped reality in that class.
Maps aren't racists but the people who drew them, given todays politically correct standards might have been.
The borders of African countries were drawn by the colonial powers based on how much of their opponents land they could claim and hold with no regard for previous tribal boundaries. This proved to be a potential disaster that we're seeing today and has led to numerous bouts of genocide, because the recipient of the atrocities are usually a minority in someone else's tribal territory.
