Actually, it comes from "niger", the Latin word for "black". Hence the Niger River and the country of Nigeria. The Spanish word "negro" also comes from the Latin form of the word.

It's really only in South Africa that the term 'Kaffir'(Kaffa) has any racial undertones. In the rest of the world where it's used, Kafir is merely the Arabic word for infidel, without any relation to race. I think it is more the disparity in "justice" administered.

When defacing a church gets you community service, defacing a mosque shouldn't get you jail time.
