wildrosegirl wildrosegirl:
 You are correct, but the list would be lengthy if we listed all of the potential team names up for this stupidity.
Lord I hate this politically correct horse shit.

Yes it would be. When you look at all the NHL, CFL, NFL and NBA teams alone there are many that could face the same fate. All the animal and bird names should be ok but many others could be a problem if they are words that relate to anything even remotely religious, violent or racist. Fortunately there are still many critters in the animal and bird worlds that have good potential as replacement names.

I agree though that it is all ridiculous. Such it is this time we live in...

What's next saying The LA Kings is a sexiest name and the team should be called the LA Queens? The Green Bay Packers could be a homophonic name? The Chicago Bears could hurt the feelings of Bears, San Jose Sharks, Calgary Flames, Calgary Stampeders, etc, etc, etc.

Exactly. Redskins is a racial slur. Not Eskimo.

Uhhh actually it IS a racial slur. Well, it's more of a pejorative. The term was given to the Inuit, likely by the Cree and was meant to imply they are savages.

The Inuit are referred to in some Cree texts as askipiw (which means "eats something raw").
It's been suggested that the original word that became corrupted to Eskimo might indeed have been askamiciw, which means "he eats it raw".

True. But it's not in the same as redskin. Would it be any different if it were the Washington kikes or wetbacks?

PETA Tells Washington Redskins To Keep Name, Change Logo...To A Potato

How can the Washington Redskins keep their name while also satisfying those, like Bob Costas, who say the football team's moniker is "an insult, a slur"?

People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals has a suggestion, which they unveiled in a recent blog post. It involves keeping the name Redskins, while changing the team logo...to a potato:

$1:
When you hear the word "redskin," what do you immediately think of? Potatoes, of course! And who could be offended by a harmless redskin potato -- except, maybe, for the Yukon Gold lobby (and if Alaska had a football team, rest assured that we'd be the first to suggest the Yukon Gold Diggers as a franchise name).

The redskin potato would be a noble mascot for a variety of reasons. Potatoes are also native Americans, having been cultivated in Peru for millennia. A tasty, versatile, animal- and environmentally friendly vegan staple, potatoes are now the most popular vegetable in the U.S. They are loaded with nutrients, including iron, potassium, vitamin C, fiber, and even protein, and red potatoes in particular are high in antioxidants.

Here's what the proposed new logo looks like:

The Kansas City Star calls the potato idea "half-baked." But this is an idea that's been cooking for a while -- it was suggested at least as far back as 2006.

We've reached out to the team -- whose owner Dan Snyder said in May he would "never change the name" -- to see if they think this one's hot. Till we hear back, tell us in the comments what you think: Should the Washington Redskins become the Washington Redskin Potatoes?

raydan raydan:
The name, "Edmonton Eskimos" is as disparaging as the Montreal Canadians.

Well, "Canadians" would be disparaging, since it's "Canadiens".

Eskimos maybe....Blackhawks doesn't seem to be a disparaging name, however...

Says who? As long as a very small number of people complain it should (in theory) get the same treatment as the Redskins...

That being said...I'm insulted by the term 'Canucks'...time to change the name!

And if you disagree, I am also insulted by your lack of insultedness.

Are you going to add Blue Jays, Orioles, Ravens and Cardinals to the list?

Absolutely!

You ever wonder why those birds are chirping all the time? INSULTED!
