Thanos Thanos:
Gen Y/The Millenials are sure turning out to be a bunch of wimps and pussies. "I don't want to ever read/watch/hear anything that runs counter to my world-view! Respect my wishes at all times 'cause I'm delicate!". I'm wagering by the time I'm 70 I'll be greatly missing the extinct-by-then boomers because the millenials ended up being about a hundred times more obnoxious than the 1960's gen ever turned out to be. :|

Yup, kids are going to be in for a big shock when they get out of school,

it'll be a lot of " I don't give a flying fuck what you think, get back to work ! ".

I think there is distinction to be made between people who have been through a trauma who could use a warning and the ninnies who don't want to be made the least bit uncomfortable.

But even then I don't think slapping on a Tipper sticker (look it up kids) will help. That's the sort of thing a university ombudsman or counsellor could mediate between a student and professor.

Trauma can be overcome though. It's not always a crippling experience, and the individual feels better after confronting and overcoming it. Expecting an entire society to self-censor and sanitize itself to eliminate the possibility of anyone anywhere ever getting upset at any time is absolutely ludicrous.

Whatever happened to simply not reading the text? I didn't even need to have a trauma in my past to employ that ingenious method as a student.

The problem with casting moral aspersion on the past, and thereby trying to ignore it in an attempt to brighten tomorrow, is that we thereby close the door on any possibility of actually diagnosing why the past was so painful, and so cheat ourselves of the chance of finding potential solutions.

At what point do we say, "If you don't wish to read the curriculum, you are cordially invited to dis-enroll?"

This.

But we won't, because that would be "blaming the victim."

What happens when they hit the real world and try to work in their field of study - no trigger warnings there, nobody to hold your hand.
