The way this case is spoken about in the media, you'd think the two felons simply took a wrong turn and mistakenly walked through one of his windows and somehow fell in his basement.
The shooter needs to spend the rest of his life in prison, no doubt. But don't tell me the two cousins were innocent victims, they were a couple of budding career criminals and this wasn't their first B&E. One of them reportedly had hit Smith's house at least once before.
Thanos is right in that they simply ran up against someone not only nastier but someone with job skills that would make him the bane of any common crook. If the guy could do embassy security, defending a home in suburbia would be child's play.
Yup Bernie is one large scumbag but those kids were also culpable in the act and if I was to hazard a guess this wasn't the first time these two committed burglary.
This statement also bothers me

She said Smith seemed like a “sour, angry old recluse who felt he was above the law.” She added she was sorry his house was burglarized, but said Kifer and Brady should have had the chance to grow up and learn from their mistake.
Where was the family in all this? Did they know what their "kids" were doing at night or did they even care? Byron may be a sour angry old recluse but, this family had better take long hard look in the mirror and accept the fact that their parenting skills were probably instrumental in raising a couple of thieves who were killed because of it.
