The US flag being worn was probably on Cinco de Mayo, Mexican Independence Day.
Cinco de Mayo is not Mexican independence day, that would be Sep 16. The fact of the matter is Cinco de Mayo is a MUCH bigger deal in the U.S. than it is in Mexico. The largest Cinco de Mayo Party in the world is in Los Angeles. Its basically our day to eat to much Mexican food, drink to much tequila and Mexican beer. It is a Mexican version of St. Patricks day.
Why not wear the US flag on the day? See nothing wrong with that. It's in the USA after all.
The article says there was Latino - White conflict at the school, so the flag must be somehow tied to this particular conflict.
As it is, there is nothing offensive in the flag-wearing itself.
I do not attend the school. so I can only offer a theory. They say that everyone is Irish on St. Patricks day. We wear the green, we dance to Irish music, we drink too much. Hell I love St. Particks day! In many parts of the States, everyone is Mexican on Cinco de Mayo. If some kids were wearing U.S. flags on St. Patricks day, would there be any trouble? Probably not. But then none of them would be yelling " hey you drunken micks, get your potato eating asses the fuck out of my country". Cinco de Mayo is the one day we celebrate Mexico in the States. Lets say some kids are wearing U.S. flags and telling the Mexican American kids " hey you wetbacks, get your bean eating asses the fuck out of my country". Now we have a problem don't we? The administration does not handle the problem correctly. They decide that banning the U.S. flag on Cinco de Mayo will solve the problem. The word gets out that an American school is banning the American flag. We have to get all worked up over that. I am supposed to pick up my baseball bat, and go down there to put these ungrateful foreigners in their place. See how easy it is to whip everyone into a frenzy?
Like I said, I was not there. That's one plausible theory of what happened. The other is that these Mexican American kids are militants. They belong to organizations that believe in the Reconquista of land that used to belong to Mexico. They do not want to see any symbols of their conquerors on what they consider to be their day. If that's the case, then people need to be put on homeland security watchlists, greencards revoked, granted citizenships revoked, people deported. We don't know what really happened because the school administration dropped the ball. I say, start with them. Lets fire the assholes that thought banning the U.S. flag was a good idea. Lets hire some people who will clamp down on this situation. If it is anti Mexican racists starting shit, than expel them. Charge them with hate crimes if its applicable. If its militant believers in the Reconquista causing the problem, ditto. Expel them, charge them, and deport if you can.
