Zipperfish Zipperfish:
How things have changed since the 30's when the good folk of Maryville burned a rapist alive.

Reading Mr. Gunn's curriculum vitae I can understand the actions of the then-citizenry.

Zipperfish Zipperfish:
bootlegga bootlegga:
It's sad that it falls to Anonymous to deal with these scum...

It is sad. Anonymous should just stay out of it. As usual they have already crowdraged the wrong target, in this case a restaurant where an alleged rapist worked, but hasn't been there for two years.

And this is why the justice system as faulty and infuriating as it is, is still the best way to deal with these things. That long drawn out process with all it's annoying technicalities is designed to prevent the wrong people from being hurt. Groups like anonymous sidestep that whole process and go straight to hurting the person that everyone knows is guilty. Sadly, it's a short step to the person everyone thinks is guilty, and then to the person that someone powerful wants to be guilty.

The original article had some quotes from the local police. The chief said they did their job and had all the information they needed to make the arrests within a few days. This wasn't a Steubenville situation where elements both inside and outside the police department there deliberately stymied the case in order to protect their big-time football heroes. They felt the case was solid and could go to trial, but it was the prosecution (after they'd been leaned on by someone (wonder who) with connections and influence) that decided not to pursue charges. If the embarrassment to the town, county, and state is enough to get court proceeding started then both the regular media and Anonymous have done their jobs.

And afterwards an investigation should be launched into exactly why the local prosecutors backed off on what the police said was a clear-cut case with solid evidence. At a minimum, at first glance, someone in the prosecutors office should be out of a job and a certain retired state politician who shares the same last name as the rapist should be expecting to have charges of his own filed against him.

That'd be easy. Rapist's grampa is a retired GOP politician. And Missouri is a proud good ol' boy red state that put a bust of Rush Limpbaugh in the memorial chamber of the state legislature. I also remember Missouri doing something disgusting back in the 2010 midterms like refusing to ban puppy mills, like some weak-kneed granola-eating lezbo liberals wanted to do,
because some TeaBirchers successfully convinced enough of the slack-jawed voters that such a thing was socialist, anti-free market, and un-American. Yup, Missouri's plenty easy to beat up on.

UPDATE: A local special prosecutor has been appointed to reopen and reinvestigate the case. Look for a lot of posturing to be done until this thing blows over.
