If I lived in Ontario, I suppose I might care more. There is no such thing as a federal Environment Act.

Sure there is. Canada's key environmental laws at the Federal level are:

Canadian Environmental Protection Act, 1999 (CEPA)
Fisheries Act
Canadian Environmental Assessment Act (CEAA)
Species at Risk Act (SARA)
Transportation of Dangerous Goods Act, 1992
Canada Shipping Act
Hazardous Products Act
Pest Control Products Act

The sum of these laws creates a lattice of legal construction that is more powerful than the US environmental laws whose verbiage is often vague and whose enforcement is often arbitrary and frequently reversed and modified at the judicial level.

Yes, but there is none called the "Environment Act."

US laws are a mess. Too bad or I could well be living in California. ha ha ha. But you practically have to be a lawyer to understand the federal environmetnal stautes (CIRCLA etc) as well as California's byzantine environnetal regualtory structure.

PublicAnimalNo9 PublicAnimalNo9:
What I find interesting is the people on here(and the media) who grumbled on about Harper's secret agenda and being anti-environment because of some minor changes to the Environment Act, are strangely silent when it comes to the left doing pretty much the same thing in Ontario.

Where's the liberal outrage over this?
Outrage over what? Nothing has changed here. Although I applaude Miller's concern and I am glad he has brought attention this impotant issue, all that has changed is that the government has opened the door to have a third party to manage these projects. These parties will still have to be licenced and vetted and will still be governed by the exact same environmental laws. There will be oversight and checks and balances.

Regardless of how people view this decision, the liberals platform on the environment is still leaps and bounds better than anything the conservatives or ondp have to offer. The conservatives's would scrap many of the current protections in the name of creating a "balance" between development and protection and the ondp's hands are tied since they have to pander to the union boses in big industry.
