BartSimpson BartSimpson:
Xort Xort:
The best part was when the RCMP kicked in the doors of houses that had been left unlocked.

But you know that the RCMP were doing a good job searching for flood victims trapped in homes because they were tossing beds and dumping out dressers and closets.

Exactly. It was all just a bull$hit excuse to do a warrantless blanket search.

And have they returned the guns to their owners like the PM told them to?

If you can't get a license, you can't have your guns back.

$1:
The RCMP say people must present a Possession Acquisition Licence to get their weapons.

If they don’t have that with them, police say they can verify the licence through the Canadian Police Information Centre computer.

Mounties say if people never had the licence, the guns can be securely stored in the police detachment until the person applies for and gets the licence.

Zipperfish Zipperfish:
Well, it was a little different with the Gestapo because they would whisk you off never to be seen again.

That said, I do find it atrocious how easily Canadians surrender their rigths. It was a couple of years ago now, but it still sticks in my craw--a woman was violently arrested here in Vancouver because she didn't hold on to the rail while descending an escalator (technically that would be a de-escalator). I was just appalled, but everyone else was like "Meh."

It's not that people surrender their rights, it is the fact that there is noone fighting for them in Canada, in fact, everyone is looking for reasons to blame the so-called "perp" ("well you should know better to not go down an escalator wiithout holding the handrail!"). As a personal, I wrote my own experiences here with the security apparatus and I was not welcomed with open arms. Either people don't want to believe that these things are happening in Canada, they have a vested interest in silencing the truth, or, they are so wrapped up in their own lives they don't care (the last point probably the #1 reason).

Furthermore; and this is important, we don't have a democracy that conducts it's own checks and balances internally. No Investigative Reporting on human rights, no guardians of the Charter so to speak. The RCMP, local police and even CSIS get away with a great deal because there is very little who expose them except the odd CBC documentary that generally focuses on actions of these forces 25+ years ago...

yeah, it's at the point where I cringe every time I head the words "for your safety." That's the excuse for it all--the unprecedented surveillance, the Patriot Act, marijuana prohibition, arresting people for not holding on to handrails. Hell, on talk radio (which I never listen to, but cuaght this one) there's a football team out here in greater Vancouver that was cutting players. This was a "house team" so they're not supposed to cut players based on ability. But you know some coaches--always trying to get an advantage. So this league was cutting players on the grounds that it wasn't "safe" for them to play. Well, duh! Of course sports aren't safe. That's what makes them fun.

I agree it's getting tiresome. It seems every time you move, there is some law or rule saying you need to move 'this' way..

gets old quick
