Unsound Unsound:
That's really cool. Don't think it would work here though. I think you'd lose too much room insulating it properly.

You would be surprised!

The actual difference between an R7 (1" of modern high end spray foam) and R24 (std batt insulation for 2x6) wall is a lot smaller then people think. Yes, the R# difference is fairly large, but the thermal performance is not.

Couple that with a foam vs batt insulation for reduced convection, and the metal skin to reduce radiant transfer, and these units can insulate just as well as a traditional wall at a significantly reduced wall thickness.

I wouldn't be shocked that these containers hit R24 (or higher), in actual thermal performance, on 2" wall thickness. And they don't stop at 2", most are furred out to 4 1/2" at minimum, as it makes them compatible with standard building components (windows, doors, electrical boxes, plumbing, etc).

I would be far more concerned with the type of windows and doors they use then I would the insulating value of the unit walls.

You know, I just did a pk session on foam insulation and it still didn't occur to me.

They probably will be nice and cosy.

I dunno. 320 square feet is not that much space to live in and be comfortable. The idea of recycling shipping containers is neat, however.

I think that with a little design finesse, one should be able to come up with a "docking' system that allow more than one unit to be ganged together. This was the original design idea behind Moshe Safdie's Habitat '67 in Montreal (although it didn't end up that way). I'm certain that it is possible but I would look to one of the slum areas of the planet to perfect it as necessity is the mother of... and all that. No one is desperate enough to fund the experiments here in rich Canada.

Just let Ikea get in there, they'll make it look easy.

$82,000 and change and that doesn't include the cost of land.

Wow you have made what should be cheap housing expensive.

Anyway, we already have premade homes that are actually low cost. I wonder if the society that designed these ever had people that worked for Apple in it's 'design' departments.
