Neither my wife nor I got SFA while student teaching(in Canada). Transportation and other costs came out of our own pocket. Students in co op programs got paid quite well. Friend of mine did a coop at UVic for urban planning. He helped develop the Galloping Goose Trail and did all sorts of stuff for View Royal parks, and did a stint with BC MoF. He was making about $20/hr in thelate 80s early 90s

Yeah, but shareholder value increased and executive pay and bonuses were boosted, so all the really important bases were covered.

Man, I hate this world sometimes.

Yeah, I feel the same way, but then, I'm a union kind of guy. Not really an "in vogue" viewpoint these days.

Of course labour laws will protect even after the unions are gone, right? We still have minimum wage, right? Not so much.

What do you do for a living, Zip?

Interns are essentially apprentices who are on an extended job interview. So long as no one is compellled to do this kind of work then it's no one else's business.

CanadianJeff CanadianJeff:
Yeah there are internships in other fields of work and you know what we call them. Apprenticeships. Guess what happens there. You get paid. No schooling often needed to start just a willing company and trainer.

If the trades can do it so can big business. You pay for school because that piece of paper is respected and understood by all employers. You get what you pay for.

If free workers are displacing paid workers as it often the case with these internships I welcome you to make your "they get some great experience" point with them.

But you actually learn things during an apprenticeship, these people were turned into desk jockeys that didn't learn anything. They were basically treated as free labour with no need to teach them more than the absolute basics.

There are many levels of monster truck mechanics! He ain't at the Monster Jam level - he's that local short track dude working on the 1980 Bronco with 36 in mudders! As for substitute chemistry teacher - that might mean meth lab. At least according to his LinkedIn profile!

Say now, maybe you guys have something in common. I'm sure he'd like another Bronco for spare parts. ;)

I was there to unionize the Taliban. Some of those suicide vests weigh like 60 lbs and they expect the poor kids to walk arounbd half the day in them in the scorching sun. Outrageous!
