My daughter lives in Banff and said that they've been cut off for a couple of days now. I told her to stock up on essentials because she'd be competing with the hotels and stranded tourists for a limited food supply. Apparently all the rooms in town are full of either tourists or stranded staff and they've started running short of places to put people and fresh food, bread and meat. They just opened up the High School as an emergency center for the people living on the west side of the Bow because that's the flood plain over there.

So far they're okay but I'm concerned because their apartment is in the basement of the Bow View Lodge and it's only about 10 feet above the river. She said the water was over the walkway along the river and lapping at the roadway. I guess all those million dollar homes along Bow Ave are gonna see if their insurance is worth the paper it's written.

Convoy Of Troops Heading To Calgary.

Just outside of Red Deer.

RCN staff check underway. Wonder if I'll get to do a Winnipeg Part Deux?

The cat seems OK with the guy on the right... with the guy on the left, it's more along the lines of, "I WILL rip your face off!!!".

They aren't going to Calgary. They have work to do on highway 40.

How long do you figure till Calgary decides it needs a Winnipeg style spillway just in case this happens again?

High and dry in Lethbridge because the city was built 300 feet above the river.

For a once-a-century event it probably won't be seriously discussed. Won't keep some tax hikes from coming though, even if the revenue gathered ends up suspiciously financing a few city councillors pet projects.

Wasn't 2005 once in a century?

2005 was weird but because it rained every day for a whole month damage was expected and more easy to prepare for. This one was different because it happened so fast, like that storm on the coast that ripped the shit out of Stanley Park a decade ago. Still a lot of snow left in the mountains too, or at least there was before the rain hit, that just ended up increasing the volume over the last couple of days.

Yes it was, the Elbow river was flowing 66% more volume this year than in 2005.

Has this happened any other time this century? I mean if they are getting floods that much then why aren't they doing something about it like building a dam or moving to higher ground?

City's about fifty times the size now that it was when this thing last happened eighty years ago. The last several days have been a one-off mix of heavy mountain rain accelerating the ongoing snow-melt. In two months it'll probably be so dry that the flooded river running through downtown will be a trickle and the farmers downstream along the Bow will be bitching like crazy about their crops needing rain.
