We're not going to be able to do that. No groundswell movement in the works, still lots of CPC supporters for whom the party can do no wrong (just look at this board), etc.

This actually goes way deeper than any economic or social differences I might have with the CPC - this is a real attack on democracy. But, under our system they are the dictators right now, as I say, people don't care enough to vote them out next election on this, and if another party comes in, doubt it will be their top priority to reverse this.

DrCaleb DrCaleb:
Those are the good parts, but they do nothing to ensure that the robocall scandal won't happen again, and they provide for no penalties should it actually happen again.

People were actually robbed of their constitutional right to vote, and once again the CPC way is to silence the critics. So the head of Elections Canada will not be allowed to tell anyone they lost their rights.
...................
There are lots of links like this. Basically, the CPC has hobbled Elections Canada, and made it easier for them to lie, buy and cheat their way back into a majority.

How could they ensure that it does not happen again, pretty well anyone can do it. They have made it harder to cheat and "the new bill is heavy on measures aimed at protecting voters from a repeat of the rogue and misleading calls that sent opposition voters to the wrong polling stations in Guelph in 2011" according to the CBC.

how is increasing advertising to encourage youth, aboriginals and people with disabilities to vote – wrong ?

How many people were robbed of their right to vote, if I remember correctly they could only find one person who said they didn't vote because of it. There has only been one charge (Sona) after two years but the CRTC did fine the NDP,the CPC, a couple of Liberal MPs and a conservative MP...

Mayrand is upset that investigations have been moved away from the administration of the Election Act. There is no need for the administration to have investigative and prosecution powers, so an independent office will be better. Especially better considering Maryand has spent over two and a half years and $ millions chasing unfounded 'robocall' rumours without success. Actually he appears to be a bit of a megalomaniac abusing his powers. So what’s wrong with E.C. being solely responsible for running elections while policing and investigative powers are shifted to an independent officer who may do a lot better.

Mayrand was demanding power to compel witnesses to bypass the Charter or courts, he will not get that.We should actively resist giving any appointed bureaucrat that sort of power to abuse people.

a good number of the bill’s provisions should be welcomed by all parties. A compliance review after the last election — the Neufeld Report — found multiple shortcomings in the way the 2011 election was handled. In the Etobicoke Centre riding, the Ontario Superior Court declared the vote “null and void” because of errors in administering eligibility standards. The Supreme Court reversed that decision but pointed to numerous administrative problems.

"Indepedent"? Is that what we're calling political appointees now?

This is about one thing and one thing only--getting the Conservatives into power in 2015. They do this by getting more money to party coffers and putting a political appointee in charge of election investigative process.

As Andy says, if it fails and another party gets in, they won't repeal the law, because it games teh system to provide an advantage the party in control. The loser is the voter.
