That's because for most of their history life back home was far more horrible for most of them than anything they'd experience fighting for the British. Hence the fact that there's more people in the modern United States with Irish last names than there are in Ireland. I love Britain for the most part but the reality is that the Celtic populations were treated just as bad by the English, from the decimation of the Welsh to the Highland clearances to the potato famine, as the Native Indians were by the Americans, Spanish (and British).
It wasn't just the Celts that were treated badly. The Angles mistreated the Jutes. The Saxons shat all over the Picts. The Danes in the north crapped on everyone and got crapped on in return. Then came the bloody Normans. They killed and maimed anybody who wasn't French.
Rewind back a few and the Romans were busily wiping out 20,000 years of oral tradition as they put the Druids to the sword. Then you have various Celtic tribes happily joining in with the Romans in killing other Celtic tribes.
The Irish/Celts are not the only group of people that can lay claim to having been oppressed in the islands of what is now Eire and the UK. England wasn’t even a country until a thousand years ago. Who can we blame for all the bad shit that happened prior?
As Cromwell rampaged through Cork and Dublin, chunks of England were still recovering from the New Model Army’s ravaging during the Civil War.
I think we have to stop placing a modern frame on the 40,000 years of history and turmoil that surrounds the various peoples that have inhabited/invaded/oppressed various other peoples on those islands.
It’s not a scenario where we can apportion blame quite so easily.
