1Peg 1Peg: Alta_redneck Alta_redneck: 1Peg 1Peg: This photo explains it a little better. I've seen this picture used so many times today it's driving me crazy. I downloaded it Dec. 4 2009 from the Calgary Sun and it is about 25 minutes north of Calgary, just south of the small town of Carstairs. There's no coulee like this between Edmonton and Leduc. Pretty kool pic tho, I guess that's why I saved it. Oh ya? I got it from facebook. Yipe, it's all over face book, oh by the way are we arguing over this?

There was a similar pileup on the Anthony Henday, SW near the Lessard overpass. But it was only 42 cars, so no one cares. 0:

What was this all from, freezing rain followed by a wet snow blizzard? Freezing rain = the scourge of north/central Alberta's weather. Nothing quite like it for fun and adventure on the roads.

Thanos Thanos: What was this all from, freezing rain followed by a wet snow blizzard? Freezing rain = the scourge of north/central Alberta's weather. Nothing quite like it for fun and adventure on the roads. No, several warm melty days from the 'Pineapple Express', a wet low from Hawaii, hitting some really cold arctic air from Siberia. Some places got 40 cm yesterday. Roads are covered by a thick layer of snow that melted, froze then got polished by high winds. I counted 30 cars in the ditch along highway 16 coming to work this morning, when I went home last night there were none. I shovelled my drive because it was ankle deep on Monday, today its up to mid calf. The drifts beside my driveway are over my shoulder. *sigh* And next week they will all melt. But if weather were 20C and sunny every day, life would be boring.

You can see the storm was pretty much centered on Edmonton. Like it had eyes! 0:

That depends on which direction your traveling if it's the first or the second. Didsbury was the starting point of the bad roads if you were going north.

Yes, north from calgary. First exit takes you to Acme, Crossfield, Cremona, and Carstairs. Second is the Acme, Carstairs, Drumheller exit. Generally highways are shitty this time of year no matter what part of the province you are in. I'd venture to say it's the most dangerous part of the whole winter driving season. A newbie to the prairies wont know this, but people who've been here for a couple years should know this by now. I've got studs for a reason and this will be the only time of year you'll find me under the speed limit. I had a real scare on highway 9 right before Drumheller 2 weeks ago. Some old cogger in an SUV was doing 70 in a hundred zone. There was some snow on the other side, didn't think much of it... Used to my truck with the good winter tyres, the one I was driving had all seasons. Got around the guy just fine, up around 90ish. Started merging back into the proper lane and the right front hit the only grippy part of the road, caused me to oversteer and spin out with no throttle/brake application. Went back and forth twice, but kept it on the road. My excuse is my first time winter driving in Alberta, but at the end of the day that isn't an excuse. I don't regret passing him, but I should have done it a bit slower.

Yes that would be the second overpass then on top of the hill in the background, here's a little action the cops caught on dash cam going up the big hill just north of Innisfail on the QE2. Usually people driving on icy roads with their cruise control on. Once they get half way up that hill the curise kicks in and their f**ked.
