PublicAnimalNo9 PublicAnimalNo9: So are the Metis on their's but you'll still root them on anyway. $1: And the court, in a 6-2 ruling, agreed, finding that “the federal Crown failed to implement the land grant provision set out in (section) 31 of the Manitoba Act, 1870, in accordance with the honour of the Crown.” ... A government intent on fulfilling its duty “could and should have done better,” said the court which also dismissed government arguments that the claimants were too late in making their case and that the matter should have been brought before the courts in the 1800s.
Queen Victoria demanded that the uprising be settled before she would allow the land to be transferred to Canada. So Riel and Macdonald hammered out the agreement that set aside the land, which was located along the Red, Assiniboine and other rivers, for the Métis children.
But Métis say that, because of lengthy delays and inopportune governmental decisions, about 6,000 of the children got disparate plots scattered about the province far from parents and siblings, the other thousand got nothing, and Manitoba passed laws that were designed to pass the land from Métis to non- Métis ownership.
The MMF has been fighting for more than 40 years and spend more than $5-million to be compensated for the loss. History... $1: In 1967, at the annual meeting of the Indian and Métis Conference, sponsored by the Winnipeg Community Welfare and Planning Council, a number of Métis attending the meeting realized that they could only make their concerns heard if they had an independent voice. They subsequently met in private and decided to form a Federation of Métis people. Thus the Manitoba Métis Federation was founded on October 1, 1967 and incorporated as a non-profit association under the Companies Act of Manitoba in December 1967. Those present at the first meeting, who can be called the founders of MMF, were Reverend Adam Cuthand, Elizabeth Isbister, Edward "Ed" Simard, Tom Eagle and Angus Spence. Dr. Adam Cuthand was appointed as the first voluntary non-paid president.

ShepherdsDog ShepherdsDog: The Metis did lose a lot of their farmland when Anglo settlers moved into the region...that fact is indisputable. The government refused to recognize their titles. It's a different situation than the native claims as the Metis were a unique but not an indigenous people as they were ethnically and culturally more European. They had stood apart from the native tribes the way most 'whites' did. The natives viewed them as whites for the most part and were in fact extremely hostile towards the Metis. It seems to be the complaint lays in the idea not that land was given, because it seems that it was (or was it ?), but that the land was given in a 'not creating a contiguous Metis homeland' fashion. Anyone have a map, showing showing what was given to who and when ? Not that it matters much, the Metis have already said they aren't interested in land. As usual, IT'S ALWAYS ABOUT THE MONEY !!

Do I hold you accountable if your great great great grandfather shot a member of my family? Nope... it's history, learn from it and move on. I am tired of them playing the willing victim and our nation having a separate status for another lineage of Canadian. We actively promote racism in the country...we have a DEPARTMENT OF INDIAN AFFAIRS. Throwing over 30 BILLION $ at this issue for just over 1 million Canadians is not only criminal it's disgusting.

Could someone please provide me with the exact, legal, definition of Metis? My understanding of what it is to be Metis is half native and half European. Which means that the Metis would not exist if it were not for European. So, if I am correct, how can they have claims to lands?

Because of section 35(2) of the [i]Charter[i]:
"In this Act, "Aboriginal Peoples of Canada" includes the Indian, Inuit and Métis peoples of Canada."

Impending Godwin alert!
All that is true. And it would, likewise, be true if we made similar vignettes of Charles Manson or Adolf Hitler "speaking" about their crazy vision and the loyalty displayed by their followers. Fail.

http://www.cbc.ca/news/canada/manitoba/ ... trand.html$1: Saturday, members of the Metis community gathered at the site of Louis Riel's grave where a ceremony was held.
"This is definitely a great reception to come and meet my people and bring home something we've been waiting 143 years for," said Chartrand. "I want to place this decision at his [Louis Riel's] gravestone and show our great respect for the man that gave us life and at the end of the day, vindication is there for him." Emotional celebration for Métis$1: Shelly Glover, MP for Saint Boniface, was also on hand to support the MMF. "I'm a proud Métis woman," she said. "The government is obviously reviewing the decision that came out the other day. I look forward to the future and I look forward to seeing what's going to come of this, but it's a proud day for the Métis people."

If so, forget that, I support the MFF.
