As a side note, from what I can remember from claymores the rear safety distance (in war time) is 15 m in the prone. Which means you are in a proper shell scrape with PPE. Which is where I think things went wrong.

I was trained on the claymore in my trades training and I was Armour, how does an Infantry officer not get trained on this? Or is it, 'reserve officer what training'?

Anyway, "I have no clue what I'm doing, WO take over" is or should be a valid defense against the charges. Maybe not the sign of a great leader, but one that is at least willing to admit he doesn't know what he is doing and needs help. That's why at the low level you get a n00b officer and a senior NCO running stuff.

From what I've read Watts wasn't the RSO, and was not part of the range staff, even if he was the platoon's officer. Just because he could have mucked about with the range and told people to move here and do this or that doesn't magicaly make him the one of the hook if someone gets hurt. Or maybe more correctly, shouldn't make him the one on the hook at least in my mind.

Have any details of the accident been published? Did they follow proper methods and practices for using the mine? Not to push the blame down to the people that got hurt but did they do what they were suppost to do?

Is their a date for the sentencing?

Strange my experiences were the opposite but when you talk about ethics it doesn't matter which force you talk about.

Ethics can be taught, and even instilled but, they will always remain a personal choice which means there is absolutely no difference between the Reg's or the Reserves when it comes to ethics.

Training. It's what you do with the training you recieve and if a Reserve uses his training to the best of his ability while a Reg with alot more training doesn't it's pretty apparent who'd be the safest person to be around, wouldn't it.
