Many modern airliners can, indeed, fly point-to-point without a pilot. They can take-off, rotate, fly, and then land all without a pilot needing to intervene.

Given how automation is acutely degrading the skills of airline pilots I'd say we're becoming dependent on automation regardless of our personal desires.

All of which are and have been survivable. Keep in mind Romney is a guy who has owned multiple GV aircraft so I am inclined to give him some slack on the comment.

Well, he is Mormon so I won't entirely rule out the possibility.

500 mile an hour relative winds, a temperature of about -50 deg C, sudden depressurization and little oxygen. Of couyrse that's only if you believ them scientist types. Survivable for moments, perhaps minutes. But I don't think I'd install roll down windows.
