Not quite. No one is forced to learn any language (unless you fall afoul of québécois laws regarding language and education). What bothers me most is that Quebec is the only province trying to legislate an official language out of existence (or into irrelevancy) in its jurisdiction. What makes it worse is that it isn't only the PQ pushing this (although they are the most forceful), pissing on the anglos is a cross partisan tradition in Quebec. Liberals seem to back the status quo while the PQ and CAQ favour further restrictions on English.

Of all the school boards I know in Ontario, learning French is mandatory for children in grades 6-9.

No kid ever learned conversational French by being in those classes. You need French immersion for that.

Even French immersion classes are a poor substitute for real immersion in a French-speaking region. I learned more French on my first day in Paris than I did in 8 years of French immersion classes.

I learned most of my French by dating a girl from Ste. Rose....and that the Catholic rite of confession was a good thing.

Your point was that we're not forced to learn a language when in fact we are.

It's true that it's pretty much useless and the majority of kids drop it at the first chance they get but many suffer through 4 years of French.
