I love Quebec.

I cherish the summers I've spent there. I admire the contributions Quebecers have made and continue to make to Canada and Canadian identity. I support Quebec civic nationalism and the province's efforts to maintain its French character provided it also makes room for its English minority. I believe these things are compatible with Canadian unity. Guys like Claude Ryan, André Laurendeau and Stéphane Dion are some of my personal heroes. I strongly support bilingualism and equalization and I believe they're fundamental elements of Canada, even if I think they both need an overhaul in the way they're currently being implemented. I've made a point of trying to understand Quebec's point of view on a lot of issues, and show that point of view to my fellow anglophones, including on this site.

I support Quebec in a lot of things, but not this.

This is pure bullsh*t that disgraces everything that Quebec and Canada are supposed to stand for. It's unjustifiable, it's stupid, and it's abhorrent. Guys like Léon Dion and Claude Ryan would never have supported this crap, and I'd be surprised if René Lévesque would have supported it.

If Marois and the PQ are idiotic enough to try and pass something like this if they get elected, then they deserve whatever happens to them.

And if worst comes to absolute worst and another referendum ends up with separation, it'd break my heart but I'd accept it. What I would not accept, though, is any kind of "sovereignty-partnership" horsecrap. If Quebec ultimately decides to leave, then in my mind it can mint its own currency, finance its own armed forces, open its own formal embassies, and assume all the actual responsibilities of independence along with the rights. This isn't just a jab at Quebec, mind you-I'd feel the same way if Alberta were to separate.

In both cases, of course, the Clarity Act would apply. If Canada is divisible, then so too are its provinces, right?

If Quebec elects this bigoted piece of shit and her party then the rest of Canada should hold a referendum on releasing Quebec from Canada. No shared money or keeping Canadian passports but an honest separation with absolutely no more ties. That includes the immediate cessation of ALL transfer payments to Quebec.

Well holy shit do I ever feel like an idiot for not even knowing about a huge loophole like this! It's been used about 15 times from what I can research too.
