The idea of a hate crime is a stupid idea. A crime is a crime, the motivation for the crime isn't important just the harm done.

No its not. Hate crime modifiers were introduced for occasions such as this. An attack on a Mosque like this isn't just arson. It's an attack on an entire community intended to make them fearful and unwanted.

What double standard? Muslims have been burning down hundreds of churches in Kosovo, Syria, Turkey, Iran, Egypt, and Tunisia the past couple years. Where it is apparently a muslim tradition to burn down other people's houses of worship it's only fair to apply the same standard to muslims.

Hate crimes are especially distasteful, because they are motivated usually by something the victim cannot change and probabally didn't do.

I find the crime of passion or crime of opportunity to be more distasteful than a crime that was planned or a crime that was because someone didn't like a group and did something to hurt a group member.

My logic is that commiting a crime because you find a victim, or think you can hurt someone without being punished is far more anti-social than someone that sets out to commit a crime for person gain, or a long established person dislike.

That is also societies' view on premeditation; it deserves harsher punishment because it could have been avoided.
