jeff744 jeff744: What's the difference between a cow/pig/chicken and a whale? Cows/pigs/chickens are bred in large numbers for human consumption are not likely to be an endangered species anytime soon. Can you say the same for most whales? -J.

Guy_Fawkes Guy_Fawkes: Again to be fair, I havent heard of any endangered whales being harvested. True, but there is a certain emotional connection that makes harvesting them very unpopular. Just like harvesting horses for food, it appears to be generally disliked. Frankly, my issue is more the why than the what. Really, this is simply a luxury item - like driving a Hummer. As is pointed out, these creatures are highly evolved and show many signs of being very intelligent. Really, we might as well compare it to hunting elephants for ivory (if their population was healthier)

Mr_Canada Mr_Canada: $1: "But don't be giving me all this shit about the sanctity of life. I mean, even if there were such a thing, I don't think it's something you can blame on God. No, you know where the sanctity of life came from? We made it up. You know why? 'Cuz we're alive. Self-interest. Living people have a strong interest in promoting the idea that somehow life is sacred. You don't see Abbott and Costello running around, talking about this shit, do you? We're not hearing a whole lot from Musolini on the subject. What's the latest from JFK? Not a goddamn thing. 'Cuz JFK, Musolini and Abbott and Costello are fucking dead. They're fucking dead. And dead people give less than a shit about the sanctity of life. Only living people care about it so the whole thing grows out of a completely biased point of view. It's a self serving, man-made bullshit story.
It's one of these things we tell ourselves so we'll feel noble. Life is sacred. Makes you feel noble. Well let me ask you this: if everything that ever lived is dead, and everything alive is gonna die, where does the sacred part come in? I'm having trouble with that. 'Cuz, I mean, even with all this stuff we preach about the sanctity of life, we don't practice it. We don't practice it. Look at what we'd kill: Mosquitos and flies. 'Cuz they're pests. Lions and tigers. 'Cuz it's fun! Chickens and pigs. 'Cuz we're hungry. Pheasants and quails. 'Cuz it's fun. And we're hungry. And people. We kill people... 'Cuz they're pests. And it's fun!
And you might have noticed something else. The sanctity of life doesn't seem to apply to cancer cells, does it? You rarely see a bumper sticker that says 'Save the tumors.'. Or 'I brake for advanced melanoma.'. No, viruses, mold, mildew, maggots, fungus, weeds, E. Coli bacteria, the crabs. Nothing sacred about those things. So at best the sanctity of life is kind of a selective thing. We get to choose which forms of life we feel are sacred, and we get to kill the rest. Pretty neat deal, huh? You know how we got it? We made the whole fucking thing up! Made it up!" - George CarlinI get it that tossing out a George Carlin quote is the hip thing to do for the young trendy protestor these days but do you have your own thoughts on this or is a Che quote next?

jeff744 jeff744: CDN_PATRIOT CDN_PATRIOT: Instead of going after Paul Watson, why don't the authorities do something useful.....like collaring all those illegal whalers and shark-finners that are doing real harm?
I can't fault Watson. Instead of talking about a situation, he went out and did something about it. He stands up for what he believes in. I have nothing but respect for this man,.
-J. Do you eat meat? If so then you have no right to criticize what others eat as long as the species involved show population growth (all of which do). We eat FARMED meat. Cows, pigs and chickens are not on the endangered species list.

Hunting whales makes we want to puke, but I've gotta give it to the whalers on logical points - as long as the species isn't endangered, and they actually eat the whale you can't say much against it. Not like those Makah Indians who killed a whale to make a point and then just let it rot on the beach. I don't get the point tho. Whaling has got to provide a minuscule amount of protein for Japan and Norway, and it's not like they can't afford to buy other meat. Why not just let it go? Just like we can logically say people should be able to breed dogs for consumption in Canada, but I sure wouldn't want to see that either.

And all over Europe and probably the rest of the world too. Never had a problem with people eating horses. I'd try it if it was offered.

The Japanese and the Norwegians hunt whales only because there's a market demand for whale meat and the products they harvest from whales. It's not because of any actual need.
If anyone wants to argue that whale hunting is a-okay then I suppose allowing the Asians to decimate the shark population for shark-fin soup is okay. And letting them slaughter bears for their gall bladders is okay. And letting them slaughter rhinos for their horns is okay, too.

It was argued that the whales hunted by Japan are not endangered. And, I see a difference between hunting to eat the whole animal or just some little bit. We do allow bear hunting in BC, but not just for gall bladders. Hunting various species of shark that aren't endangered seems OK to me - but eat the whole fucking thing. Supposedly dogfish makes good fish and chips.
