martin14 martin14: Tricks Tricks: Weren't similar complaints brought against our Women's Hockey team? And we defended them on the basis that it would be insulting to have a team take it easy on us? Oh that's right. Lets stay consistent folks. Not sure if points scored could count towards placements, like it does in hockey, though. Didn't matter, we didn't need to score more than 10 times a game to get said placement. Lets be realistic, it's almost always going to be a Canada/USA final.

Tricks Tricks: Lemmy Lemmy: If I were the Nigerian coach, I would have had my players just stand at the sidelines and let the Americans score as much as they wanted on nobody. "See if you can score 1,000, assholes, we won't try to stop you." Why? Would you do the same thing if you were the Italian women's hockey coach after we beat them like 16 - 0? If goal differential had an impact on seeding, no. If it didn't, yes. There's no honour in running up the score.

Brenda Brenda: Weren't the Olympics all about AMATEURS tho? That used to be the case. The problem with that was that the Soviets and other authoritarian countries had athletes who clearly earned their living as athletes yet were considered amateurs by the IOC. The hypocrisy of that situation was resolved by simply getting rid of the 'amateur' rule and allowing the best athletes from every country to participate regardless of how they earned a living. In basketball the result is obvious when the US dominates because of our professionals who excel at the game. But I don't hear anyone complaining when their professional soccer players handily beat the Americans.

We were winning nearly every game by more than 10 points compared to the next place's 5 or 6. It was unnecessary.

The Nigerians were competing in the premier tournament for international men's basketball. They should expect stiff competition.

When it comes to basketball, there really is no competition with the USA, which is why basketball shouldn't even be an Olympic sport.

Then they'd be retarded. The 5000th best American player is better than the best player from any of Spain, Lithuania or Argentina.

Kind of like when Canada never wins the World Championship of hockey...because none of our best players compete. Don't be daft. If the USA sent 20 teams of their best players, they'd finish 1 through 20. Argentina and Spain would fight it out for 21st. And what the fuck is "wut"?

What do you mean, "Don't be daft?" A group of USA players, all of them within the top 20 the country has to offer, are playing Argentina right now and the USA is losing 55-54. I'm legitimately nervous right now.

I mean don't be purposely obtuse. Even the '27 Yankees lost once in a while. What would the score be if the US team, thrown together a couple of weeks ago, had been practising together as the Argentine national team has over the past several years? You call Olympic basketball a competiton if you like. The rest of the world doesn't see it as one.
Either way, running it up against Nigeria was unsportmanlike and if I were on the Nigerian team, there'd have been at least one tournament-ending injury on your side.

Denouncing and endorsing unsportsmanlike behavior in the same sentence. What? Are you going for the gold medal in hypocrisy? If so...

BartSimpson BartSimpson: Denouncing and endorsing unsportsmanlike behavior in the same sentence. What? Are you going for the gold medal in hypocrisy? Is it hypocritical to put murderers to death? Is it unsportsmanlike to punish someone for their unsportsmanlike conduct, with emphasis? Call it hypocrisy if you like. I call it justice. Payback's a bitch. You don't kill, you don't get executed. You don't run up the score on me, I don't snap your femur. Kinda like you busting someone in the yap for calling you a racist. No call of racist, no busted yap, right?
