It was never the equipment that was the difference in the Israel-Arab conflicts, but the men using them.

Hey, if God's on your side, why bother with training?

I'm sure the knowledge that a second Holocaust would occur shortly after Israeli forces lost the war was a big motivator too.

But the key difference was that the vast majority of Arab soldiers were over-confident (because of sheer numbers and technology), poorly trained (if at all), and largely composed of unwilling conscripts.

That's precisely the mindset of so many muslims that prevents them from being decent soldiers. Too many of them are infected with the notion of 'Insh'allah' or, If god wills it.

That's why you see so many of these morons firing automatic weapons by just pointing then in the general direction of the enemy. See, if they actually aimed the weapon that would be an affront to their moon god because then one would be asserting that human skill trumps the will of allah.

I've had to try to train some of these jerks and they just don't get the idea of aiming. Some of them go so far as to remove the optics from their rifles because they believe that interferes with the will of allah.

While some few of these guys are, indeed, competent and motivated soldiers, the vast majority are putzes. In short, the more religious the individual is the less effective a soldier he is.

If Egypt and the rest of the mob attacks Israel again Israel will clean their clocks and this time I hope Israel has the sense to keep any territory they gain and then they kick any vermin out of the conquered lands. They'd also do well to ignore the treasonous leftists in the west who would celebrate were the Israelis all exterminated by the 'peaceful' muslims.

Let’s hope it doesn’t come to that, but I hate to say I agree with Bart…

If some other country decided they wanted to eradicate Canada and we kicked the snot out of them, turn about fair play… a war we didn’t start, didn’t want, but had to fight. Once it’s done take the land that makes strategic sense and expel their population.

I will admit that I did not expect you to put aside your politics and to embrace pragmatism on this topic.

+5 for your intellectual honesty. R=UP

Israel didn't do so good in Lebanon in 2006 when they went in after Hezbollah. Their lacklustre performance caused a lot of serious concern among military analysts. The IDF may have lost it's edge as they haven't seen any real combat since 1982, that the general staff is now full of political appointees and not real soldiers, and they have become far too reliant on air power. Whether or not the Arabs and Iranians are still no better than cannon fodder remains to be seen but it's an arguable point too that the Israelis are not as good in combat now as they were in previous generations.

The problem isn't the resolve of the Israeli soldier but the resolve of the political class. When there's any fight between the terrorists and the Israelis the Israelis fight with a handicap imposed on them by the political class who are worried that if the IDF cuts looses and does its job that the Western media will be 'offended'.

Were I PM in Israel and a conflict came up the first thing I'd do is to evict all of the foreign press and advise them that if they report from the other side their press credentials will not protect them.

Then I'd let the IDF handle the mission as they see fit.

At this point the only way the IDF will get cut loose is if Israel gets gangbanged again and I would not rule that out.

I figure Turkey is going to invade and (efectively) annex Syria and Jordan will soon fall to the fundamentalists and that will leave Israel surrounded by sworwn enemies. A war against Israel at that point will be a matter of when, not if.

At that point Israel won't care FA what CNN or CBC has to say about how they run a war.
