peck420 peck420: Maybe Augusta should do what the Ladies Golf Club in Thornhill, Ontario, does?
Only women can be members, but men can get 'Guest Card Holders'.
Let's you play the course twice a month (maximum), but you don't get any benefits of being a member.
Whoops, they now have an Gold Guest Card Holder, that allows for unlimited plays per month. They may already do so. We had a male club like that here, but the bitching certainly didn't end there - I think there was even a human rights complaint. Forget what the outcome was.

raydan raydan: ...as a side note, The Masters is a huge part of Augusta's financing. I don't know if that would matter all that much. Augusta's membership is very wealthy and is currently (rumoured) to be charged peanuts ($10,000/year). I know of multiple, non-PGA courses, that charge in excess of $30,000 a year and have waiting lists. Although, I don't know if Augusta would have the draw it does without the PGA? Feels weird thinking that they should have the right to allow whomever they wish, they are private, when the only person I golf with regularly is my wife.

They can complain all they want. As long as there are women only clubs allowed, nobody really has any legal leg to stand on. I figure, let them do what they want to do. Natural competition will sort it out any ways. Clubs that allow all will eventually be the only viable option, forcing the ones that don't to change or close up shop. Take me for example. My favourite golf partner is my wife. Am I going to spend money at Augusta? Or am I going to go to course that let me play with my favourites? I know where my money is going to go.

I've spent enough time in men only situations like logging camps, construction or mountaineering that I really don't see what the attraction is. Always nicer to have women along. But, we should have the freedom to associate with whomever we choose. You see the same thing with university: black clubs, Asian clubs, GLBTTARSTUV clubs (hope I haven't left anybody out), women's clubs. Imagine somebody starting a straight white men club - the horror. (It actually does sound pretty horrible, but that's besides the point.)

The funny thing tho, is that (in the US) "all black male schools" are fully accepted.

Yes, the should admit women, but I don't think it should be legislated on them. It's a private organization.

DanSC DanSC: Yes, the should admit women, but I don't think it should be legislated on them. It's a private organization. Amen to that. The argument the women's groups make is that they 'need' access to places like this because it gives them access to powerful men. They did the same thing to the Bohemian Club and forced the men's club to hire women as if that would accomplish anything. What it accomplished is that while there is still an encampment at the Bohemian Grove the Old Guard members now meet for their real encampment on a private island in the Caribbean that is beyond the reach of politically correct courts.

The club should be allowed to admit or exclude anyone they choose. That's what "private" means. There's a women's only golf club in Toronto, so I suspect they likely exist in Georgia too.

That's why they started to invite blacks... no, that's not right... they invited them because they were pressured to do so and could have lost the Masters. They probably will start inviting women eventually, but not because they want to.

raydan,
I don't think anybody is saying that they won't be forced too. I think everybody is just pointing out the hypocrisy of forcing them to do it.

peck420 peck420: raydan,
I don't think anybody is saying that they won't be forced too. I think everybody is just pointing out the hypocrisy of forcing them to do it. If they are "forced" to by withdrawal of sponsorship or loss of members or just shame, I have no problem with that. That's how it's supposed to work. They have to deal with the consequences of their choices. If they are legally forced to, that I don't agree with, and I guess won't happen, since there's no law against it.

andyt andyt: Imagine somebody starting a straight white men club - the horror. They already have one in the US. It's called the GOP. Other types (unheartlandishly hued, uterus carriers, fagwads, etc.) need not apply. Seriously, Augusta's private so leave them alone. Don't like the Masters? Then don't watch it. There's a lot more serious issues out there for women to worry about, like TeaParty state governments ordering vag probes being forced onto them in the name of Jesus.
